Armour Heights Winter 2020 Lunchtime Program - Parent Information and Registration Package

The FSA is pleased to be running lunchtime programming for our students again this academic year. These programs are run by external partners who come into the school during the winter months at lunch recess to offer a range of exciting and educational programs for students of all ages.

Program Duration:

  • Programs will start the week of Jan 13 th, 2020 (second week back after Christmas break) for 10 weeks (no programs during March Break March 16-20) with programs ending the week of March 23 rd, 2020.
  • Monday Programs - If there is a PA Day or Stat holiday during your program, the make up class will be held during the week of March 30 th, 2020 .
  • Friday programs will be 9 weeks due to the number of holidays/PA days on Fridays, with the last day of class on April 3, 2020.
  • A summary of the programs is included in the table below, followed by a detailed description of each program and electronic registration information

Registration

  • **NEW** This year, all of our external partners will provide on-line/electronic registration and payment – NO paper registration forms or cheques need to be submitted to the school
  • Registration will commence on Dec 9, 2019
  • Last Day for Registration will be Dec 20, 2019. Late registrations will not be accommodated
  • If enrollment numbers are not met for a particular program, and the class cannot be offered, you will be contacted.
  • Program registration is first come first served.
  • NOTE – there are NO refunds or pro-rating once the program has begun

Logistics:

  • A final schedule, including room #s, will be communicated to students over the announcements when the programs start
  • All children are to eat lunch in their classrooms from 11:30-11:45 prior to attending the lunch programs. Programs will run from 11:45-12:30
  • JK and SK students will be escorted to and from their programs, students in all other grades are expected to arrive at the designated classroom after eating their lunch.

Please contact your child’s teacher if you require financial assistance to participate – some bursary spots are available.

DI NAHLA ART – MIXED MEDIA/ART DECO

The students will be making at least two complete art projects using paint, decoupage, stencils, modelling paste & many more to create a 3D effect on different surfaces (wood, canvas, glass & more). Demonstration of colour mixing and use of different brushes & techniques on different surfaces, allow the students to make projects that they can proudly take home and display. Everyone is an artist, and it's usually the shyest if kids that enjoy art the most because it brings out what they want to say and what they feel. And we guide them through everything step by step!

TYPING ADVENTURES 101

Children will learn the basics of typing, developing their fine motor skills through our exciting interactive weekly adventure games and activities, including POP UP tests and challenges to win cool prizes! Based on a Mac environment children will also learn how to navigate their way through Photo Booth, Comic Life and iMovie as they edit and create their own ONE-OF-A-KIND photo slide show movie. In addition to receiving a certificate of completion, children will also take home their photo slide show movie on a brand new USB key on the last day of the program.

ADVENTURES AT HOGWARTS

In this fun program we’ll do as Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny do… we’ll discover our wands and learn magic spells, we’ll make chocolate frogs and explore science and potions, we’ll follow a Marauder’s Map and engineer escapes, and we’ll even play Quidditch! HANDSEWING 101: DIY Animal Blankets

IPAD MOVIE CREATIONS

This program is the ultimate multi-media IPAD experience! Throughout the program, students will learn how to create up to 4 different projects using a variety of IPAD APPs. Students will also have the opportunity to challenge their gaming skills with our popular Games of Strategy Apps. At the end of the program, students will have created a unique Photo Slide Show movie, an HD Toy-Animation Movie, A Special Effects/Super Powers Feature Film Movie & a one-of-a-kind Movie Trailer Project. DETECTIVE SCIENCE

Finding fingerprints, testing DNA and searching for clues are just a few key components of Crime Scene Investigation. As a forensic investigator, students will participate in activities mimicking those of an authentic crime scene investigation. They will learn about the techniques used by forensic investigators, as well as methods to recreate those techniques in the classroom using teamwork and keen deductive skills. Will you discover who committed the crime?

CHEM-MYSTERY

From crazy concoctions to exploding creations, chemical reactions are all around us – but for many, the science behind these reactions remains a mystery. Join us in Chem-Mystery as we attempt to solve these chemistry mysteries! Students will learn about both physical and chemical reactions, and then explore the different facets of each. We might explore the marvels of bubbles, create elephant toothpaste, or create our own Oobleck and make it groove to a tune. Can you solve this Chem-Mystery?

MINI HANDS ART

Art Studio For Children returns to AH for Winter 2020 with fabulous art projects with our smallest artists. You can’t imagine what they can do!

VIDEO GAME DESIGN

This program is designed to challenge students in a fun, non-competitive environment as they design and create their own unique video games. Throughout the program, students will learn how to create up to 5 different video games. For each game, they’ll learn how to add characters, obstacles, backgrounds, and multiple skill levels.  Students will also be able to fully customize their title pages, high-score boards, instruction pages and cheat codes. At the end of the program each student will receive a copy of everyone’s video games to take home on a BRAND NEW USB KEY!

LITTLE FINGERS MUSIC

The Little Fingers Music Keyboard Classes are a fun introduction to keyboard for JK-G1 learners.

Students learn basic keyboard skills, read notes and rhythms, complete written theory exercises and a sing a variety of songs.  Keyboards are supplied and classes are designed by Little Fingers Music founder and composer Charlie Kert (Honours degree in Theory and Composition) and taught by qualified music teachers.

Art Studio For Children returns to AH for Winter 2020 with a study of some of the great painters of the 20th century. We will take inspiration from their style as we create fabulous pieces of art utilizing new techniques.

KNITTING CLUB

  • Cost $144 including HST
  • Grades 1-6

Learn to knit with Jessica! Knitting is a trendy and timeless life skill that encourages creativity, dexterity, concentration and relaxation! Kids will learn to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off their work. They will use their skills to create accessories, toys and stuffies as well as gifts. Other forms of knitting will also be explored, like: finger knitting and loom knitting. Beginner and experienced knitters are welcome!

About the teacher:
Jessica Haberman is an exceptionally friendly, fun and experienced OCT primary/ junior teacher, a Girl Guide leader, an avid knitter and a local mom.
