The Martingrove English Department offers a wide range of courses for all pathways including Workplace, College, University, Gifted and Advanced Placement. Students are encouraged in Grade 9 onwards to develop independent reading habits through self-selecting novels that will create the foundation for lifelong reading habits and participating in differentiated book clubs. Senior students can also enroll in popular optional courses such as Yearbook and Writer's Craft (Creative Writing) to round out their Martingrove CI English experience.

English is compulsory in all four years of high school and is an admissible mark for both colleges and universities across North America.  From Grades 9-12, there are a wide range of extension activities offered to students via guest speakers, field trips and writing contests often in conjunction with the MCI Library Learning Commons. Recent field trips include a campus tour of University of Toronto, a visiting professor from Ryerson and a writing workshop at Humber College. More than half of students who participate in the Advanced Placement Program through Grade 12 achieve a Level 4 or 5 on the AP Exam and advanced standing at specific universities.

There are two English offices 144A and 173A and students are welcome to come by for extra help and/or make an appointment with their teacher. If you would like to reach the MCI English Department, please email.
