About the School Council

School councils are an excellent way for parents to get involved in their child`s education.

Mowat Collegiate has an elected school council that is an important forum for involving all members of the school community in issues that affect the education of students.

The school council is made up of an elected committee of parents, staff and student representatives, appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership which includes all parent of children attending the school.

The school council advises the principal on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, curriculum goals and priorities, school budget priorities, school safety, renovation plans, after-school activities, and criteria for selection of new principals.

F.Reflections:

2020-2021 Reflection:

On behalf of the Sir Oliver Mowat Parent Council, I would like to recognize the academic year we’ve all just survived. It started with the uncertainty of: Covid, in class, virtual learning, synchronous, non-synchronous classes, etc, which brought with it many novel and unprecedented challenges. As we all know, with challenges, come opportunities. We were able to come together as a community to ensure that our children in our community continued their education, participating in online learning at home, where virtual classrooms brought us together as never before. And staying at home together with our families for a prolonged period this year gave us the opportunity to re-focus our priorities and values in our closest relationships, in a way that could not have been achieved in our pre-pandemic routines. I especially want to thank our teachers, staff and leaders who ‘stayed the course’ and did so much for our children and community.

I can’t think of a more resilient group than our students--especially the grade 12 graduates who handled themselves with such grace despite a very challenging year and leveraged the commitments modelled by parents, family, teachers, staff, and others in the community….I am grateful to the teachers and staff on the graduation/commencements committee who came up with a great ideas and the prep work prior. We couldn’t do it without some very special and dedicated parents, teachers, students and volunteers.

I’d like to especially recognize our Council: Secretary; Lisa Nugara, who keeps our records seamless and communication timely, Student Safety Parent Representative Mark Zajac who kept mental health, addictions and anti-racism initiatives and efforts on the agenda at Council.Ms Ghazariansteja who is an exceptional person and staff representative, Ms. Leslie Ann Klinger Principal collaborative leadership representing the Board and yours truly as your elected Chair. I can honestly say that there was a lot of shuffling and hustling when Covid hit but we managed to get it all done. We’ve taken our due process and responsibilities very seriously.

The budget (PIC grant) is in a good stable place with a buffer for next year and we have tabbed funds for their intended purpose for next year. There will be more detail at the Annual General Meeting, September 2021.

I would also like to recognize the Council Adhoc working group who led our Anti-Racism initiative planning for our event that we have to move to the next academic year! Our sponsored event included a Mowat Parent Ms. Rosetta Babayan who got us off the couch and on to Zumba!Parents asked for an Addiction and Mental Health workshop and our very own Social Worker and Psychologist were able to do this for us and customize it to our community! Our Council has demonstrated that collaborations linked to parental engagement is an essential piece of our children’s success.

Overall, I’d like to thank everyone who has helped to support the Parent Council and others not mentioned by name who all exemplify the special parents, students and stakeholders we have in our Sir Oliver Mowat Community. If you are leaving as staff, leadership, parent council members, students, parents, stakeholders, we thank you for all you have done to make our community such an incredible one to be a part of.Best wishes to all of you, your families and I hope you have a great summer!

Warm regards,

Rose-Marie Fraser
