From our Graduation Coach for Black Students (Keisha’s Korner):
Life Education Program: The Life Education Program is an engagement, achievement and well-being initiative for Grade 9 & 10 African, Afro-Caribbean, Black (ACB ) male students in grade 9 & 10. This initiative is aligned with TDSB's multi-year strategic plan and designed to address the mental health and wellbeing needs of Black boys using a prevention-based approach.
The purpose of the program is to identify and facilitate Black affirming healing practices and strategies. This is done by equipping students with personalized tools and resources to address cultural stigma, systemic anti-Black racism and racial trauma caused by diverse systems like education.
Black Students Leadership Course: The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement is excited to share our partnership with award-winning actor, playwright, producer and author Trey Anthony. Trey will work alongside the educator in the Black Student Leadership Course (BSLC) to facilitate in-person and virtual sessions with a focus on “How To Write Your First Play.” The BSLC is a 1 credit open grade 11 course (CPC301 Black Studies Course: Politics in Action) with a maximum capacity of 25 students.
Black Student Leadership Course: In accordance with the African oral tradition, the BSLC is designed to hone the writing skills of Black high school students. Students will develop a monologue, to discuss some aspects of their African/Black/Caribbean identity and address the needs expressed by students.
In addition, Black students will explore:
- Key elements of a playwriting including plot, character, dialogue, settings, and themes.
- An understanding of the evolution of their histories and their varying intersecting identities.
- Centering African oral storytelling, African philosophies and worldviews, languages, and cultures as relevant to understanding the experiences of African/Black/Caribbean peoples.
- The engagement in the course is designed not only to provide information to students, but also to become co-creators in the narratives, meanings, and understandings that are brought to fruition in their final project.
