School Code of Conduct

CODE OF CONDUCT

RESPECT FOR SELF, OTHERS AND THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Students are responsible for attending all scheduled classes, for being on time and for being prepared to work to the best of their ability.
  • Students are expected to behave in a manner that contributes to a positive learning environment in the classroom and in the broader school community and neighbourhood. This includes representing Harbord at external events such as field trips, competitions and sporting events and when travelling to and from school.
  • Students may use personal electronic devices during class time for educational purposes, if permitted by the teacher. At all other times during class, devices should be safely stored and placed on “silent”.
  • Members of the school community (students and staff) are responsible for treating others with dignity and respect at all times by working cooperatively for the betterment of all.
  • Aggressive and/or violent behaviour will not be tolerated; the use of profanity, ableist, discriminatory, disrespectful, racist, sexist or homophobic language is not acceptable and violates TDSB policies.
  • Students have a responsibility to maintain a clean environment in all areas of the school: classrooms, lockers, hallways, cafeteria, auditorium, school grounds and library.
  • Members of the school community are expected to treat school property and the possessions of others with respect. Vandalism and theft of property is not acceptable behaviour.
  • Each student is assigned an individual locker by the homeform teacher. Lockers should not be shared nor should you reveal your lock combination to anyone. School-approved locks may be purchased in the main office. Do not leave valuables in your lockers. Please note lockers are the property of Harbord C.I. and the TDSB.
  • Food should be consumed in the cafeteria to ensure health and safety is maintained and to assist caretaking in their duties. During lunch, because of limited cafeteria space, you may also eat and drink in other hallways with the expectation that all garbage and recycyling is placed in the proper containers. Teachers may make special arrangements to have food in classrooms. Students are encouraged to bring reusable containers to promote litterless lunches.
  • Smoking and vaping are prohibited on Harbord and all TDSB properties within 20 metres of the property boundaries. Students and staff must respect our smoke-free, healthy environments.
  • Alcohol, illegal drugs, weapons (including replicas) and laser pointers are banned from school property and from school-related activities.
  • TDSB has a ‘Scent-Aware’ policy. To be considerate to those with allergies and sensitivities, we ask that students do not wear perfumes or colognes in school.

DRESS CODE:

  • Students are expected to follow the newly adopted Student Dress Policy - (P042). This policy establishes fair and equitable standards and practices for student dress across the TDSB. Detailed information about the policy appears in the common pages of this student agenda.

CONSEQUENCES FOR CODE OF CONDUCT NON-COMPLIANCE:

  • Many opportunities exist for positive and constructive resolution of conflict or disagreement between members of the school community through mediation and/or consultation with teachers, Curriculum Leaders, Student Services Counsellors, Student Success or Special Education teachers, Social Worker, CYW, or Vice-Principals/Principal and Parents/Guardians.
  • Consequences may be imposed if a student(s) fails to comply with the Code of Conduct. These consequences may include detentions, contact with parents/guardians and interviews with the teacher(s) and/or Principal or Vice-Principal. More serious or repeated violations carry more serious consequences including suspension and expulsion. The TDSB Safe School Policies, Procedures, and Consequences for inappropriate behaviour will be followed. Harbord’s Code of Conduct has been developed in compliance with the Toronto District School Board’s Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.
