Business SHSM

The Business Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) enables students to focus their learning in the Business sector, while gaining advanced knowledge and skills, prior to graduating from high school.

SHSM allows students to explore their interests, network, learn new skills and have hands on experiences while pursuing leadership opportunities.

Students who complete all of the requirements earn a red seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, indicating that they have successfully completed the program.

CERTIFICATIONS

Students will be required to take four (4) compulsory training courses:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Level C (CPR)
  • Standard First Aid
  • Customer Service
  • WHMIS

Students are also required to take two (2) elective training courses which could include:

  • Portfolio Development
  • Fraud Prevention
  • Business Etiquette
  • Counterfeit Detection
  • Public Speaking
  • Leadership

These certifications will enable students to acquire additional knowledge and skills related to safe work habits and give students an advantage when entering the work force.

Academic Course Requirements

 A total of nine courses must be successfully completed to meet the requirements of the Business SHSM program, including:

  • 4 Business Credits
  • 1 English Credit
  • 2 Math Credits
  • 2 Co-op Credits

Students will be required to participate in a 2-credit Cooperative Education course in a placement related to Business.There they will acquire new skills and learn about the world of Business, while testing out a potential future career option and making connections in the field.

Graduation: Red Seal Designation

Students who successfully complete the SHSM program will be awarded:

  • a SHSM red seal of distinction on their diploma
  • A record of their achievement in SHSM
  • Formal recognition on their Ontario Student Transcript
