Dear Bowmore Families,

As we enter the month of December, anticipation of events begin with the start of Advent for our Christian communities. Moreover, our Jewish families begin Hanukkah - Chag Sameach - as the first candle was lit on Thursday Dec. 7 and continues through until Friday December 15. At Bowmore PS, on Wed. Dec. 6, 2023 we had a presentation from the LiveDifferent organization for our intermediate students which focused on changing ourselves and the world around us by embracing different lifestyles. A peer mentorship group has been formed to develop leadership skills on helping students develop empathy. As well we have created a reading mentorship group where our grade 8 students will read at lunch time with grade 1 and 2 students. And our grade 7 students with our grade 3 and 4 students will work to build STEM projects at lunch.  This week we are preparing for our concert - please find the  schedule in this bulletin.  On Dec. 15, 2023 our student council will be hosting a bake sale before school, recess and at lunch - funds from this sale will go to help reduce the cost for the Ski trip for our intermediate students.

Effective November 30th, 2023: *NEW* Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Helpline 9-8-8

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) through the Canadian Radio and Television Corporation (CRTC) has announced on November 30th, 2023 a national three digit Mental Health and Suicide Prevention hotline number, 988, will be in effect.

CMH’s new role in leading the development of 988 service delivery in Canada builds on their experience delivering Talk Suicide Canada, previously known as the Canada Suicide Prevention Service. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has been selected as the organization to lead the coordination of service delivery for the national three-digit number.

In the face of increased demand for crisis services, 9-8-8 provides:

  • A number that’s easy to remember in a crisis situation.

  • Support in English and in French, by phone and text.

  • Quick access to support from trained responders, available 24/7/365.

  • High quality, evidence-based, equitable suicide prevention and crisis support for everyone in Canada.

For more information about 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline, visit https://988.ca.

More information is also available at 9-8-8 | CAMH and 9-8-8 number for mental health and suicide prevention | CRTC
