at the tdsb, school councils are an excellent way for parents to get involved in their child's education. every tdsb school has an elected school council. your school council is an important forum for involving all members of the school community in matters that affect the education of students. the school council is made up of an elected committee of parents, staff and student representatives, appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership which includes all parents of children attending the school. the school council advises the school administration on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, equity (including anti-oppression and anti-racism work), student mental health and well-being, school improvement goals, school budget priorities, school safety, renovation plans, after school activities, and criteria for selection of new principals.

school councils work to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents and caregivers. they are legislated and governed by regulation 612 of the education act.

school councils work inclusively, recognizing that all parents/caregivers have an equitable place in our school's community, free from racism, classism, and other isms, intentional or unintentional. they recognize that participation can take many forms and work to:

  • offer parents/caregivers a variety of ways to share their voices, knowledge, and expertise
  • recognize that relationship building is key to breaking down walls and barriers
  • strive to identify and eliminate barriers to participation for parents/caregivers
  • disrupt practices that contribute to oppression based on race, class, nationality, abilities, gender, education, or language
