Dear Bowmore Families,

We had lots of excitement this week as our Intermediate students went skiing to Snow Valley in Barrie, Ontario. The ski trip was organized by Mr. Bob Comendador and we truly appreciate all his work in coordinating all our ski trips this year for our grades 4-8 students.  Secondly we wanted to extend congratulations to Mr. John Clarke who will be leaving us on Fri. March 1, 2024 to become the Acting Vice Principal at Roden PS. In his place we welcome Mr. Daniel Sooley who will take on the junior/intermediate Phys.Ed and Health program.

Next week on Tues. Feb. 27, 2024, we are proud to welcome D.O. Gibson who will be presenting the History of Black Canadians through rap to all of our students in Grades JK-8. Duane Gibson aka D.O. is a Guinness World Record setting rapper and York University graduate that has been inspiring hundreds of thousands of youth since 2001. Gibson has had several videos play on MuchMusic and Drake even made a cameo in one of them. He has been profiled on CBC, City TV News, Global, Toronto Star and even guest co-hosted Entertainment Tonight Canada Live. D.O.’s message to youth is that setting goals and persevering is the key to success. Growing up in communities where he was the only Black Canadian child, D.O. learned what it is like to be different from the crowd at an early age. He confronted bullies, dealt with racism, and overcame shyness by believing in himself and following his goals. D.O.’s message to youth is that “Can’t nobody hold you down!”For his full bio and more information visit: http://staydriven.com/about-d-o/

News from the Library

The library is in need of a shelving blitz. If you like to organize and have a couple of hours to spare during the week of February 26 to March 1st, please let Leah Jarvis know at leah.mcnabjarvis@tdsb.on.ca to set up a schedule. The job is basically to go through all the shelves and put things in their proper place. The #Shelfies do a great job but with over 20,000 books in our collection and 1000 students visiting the library every 10 days a little extra 'deep cleanse' is needed. Thank you for any time you are willing to give!

The Read-A-thon is going strong with our "Leap into Reading' theme. Many students are tracking their minutes and are very proud of themselves. Continue to read, read, read and hand in your tracking sheets to Mrs. Jarvis by Monday, March 4th. Many prizes to be won! A bookmark making contest begins this week. Listen to announcements for details and the bookmark template can be picked up in the library.

Our Forest of Reading book clubs started last week with over 60 students participating! Grade 4-6 is Tuesday at lunch and Grade 7/8 will be Fridays at lunch. Primary students will be participating in the Forest of Reading program in their classrooms. A great program to celebrate Canadian authors.

As a heads up, the library along with the #Shelfies will be running a used book sale in May. We will be looking for book donations that are in excellent used condition. You may start sending in any donations to be brought to the library from now until May. More details will come out in the spring but books will be sold and all proceeds will go towards purchasing new items for the library (bean bag chairs, chess tables, books, etc)

Lastly, we are in need of some donations of puzzles. If you have a used puzzle that you are done with, consider sending it into the library. Students have really enjoyed collaborating in the library and working on various puzzles. Staff have donated some but we are looking for more.... any theme with 100-500 pieces is ideal. Thank you! Thank you for your continued support of our amazing library.

Happy Reading, Bowmore! Leah Jarvis

Safe and Caring Committee Update

As a means to promote school belonging, we are proposing that the last Friday of the month be a Spirit Day.  This month, we are asking that all students wear a favourite hat or toque on Friday, March 1st 2024.  Next month, students will be asked to wear their pyjamas to school on Thursday March 28th 2024 (as Friday March 29th is Good Friday and a holiday).

On Wednesday, February 28th 2024, we are asking that all students wear pink to school to honour Pink Shirt Day, an annual event against bullying, held in Canada and New Zealand. Participants wear pink shirts and attend or host informative events to raise awareness about bullying, particularly in schools. Pink Shirt Day was started in 2007 in Canada, where it is held on the last Wednesday of February each year.
