Music Monday

What a fantastic Music Monday we had today!! All the students stood in 2 circles singing and signing “International Space Station”. It was wonderful to be a part of such a special event. Thank you to Mme. McCool, Ms. Kang, and Crystal for spearheading, organising and teaching the song to all the students in all 3 languages. Thanks also to Mr. K. for helping with all the technical requirements of pumping the music outside. Susan and Tanya were our parent extraordinaire videotaping and taking photos of the event. We hope to post them on the website soon.  You may want to check out Citytv tonight on the 6:00 p.m. news….there’s a chance we’re on!!

Warm weather clothing
The arrival of warm weather is often accompanied by a change in wardrobe among students. A simple rule of thumb about appropriate school clothes is: “The tops have to touch the bottoms and the bottoms have to touch the tops.” Short shorts, short tops, and spaghetti straps are best left at home for weekend wear. If a student's attire is not suited for school we will help the student find alternative attire or call home for something different to wear. Let’s save the beach clothes for the beach!!

Café Maria

Bonjour! From Monday, May 13th until Wednesday, May 15th, the Grade 6's and Mlle. Miller will be holding “Café Maria” in the library. Come join us from 10:05 a.m. until 11 a.m. for delicious treats, and snacks in a French-style café. Also, on May 14th, we will be celebrating National Denim Day. Make sure to wear your jeans! The Grade 6 students and Mlle. Miller would like to dedicate “Café Maria” to honor Davisville P.S. librarian, Maria Mantello, who is currently being treated for breast cancer. All proceeds from the café will be going to the CURE Foundation, who “provide financial support necessary to create resources that will improve the outcome of those affected by breast cancer.” Bring your change, and your appetite! Bon appétit!

EQAO Week May 27 – May 31
This is just a reminder that all students in grades 3 and 6 will be writing the EQAO assessment the week of May 27th. It is important for all grade 3 and 6 students to be at school everyday rested and ready to go!! Students in the English stream and Deaf Hard of Hearing stream will be writing both the English Language and Math; students in the French Immersion stream will be writing just Math. Check out www.eqao.com for parent resources and for practice assessments.

Parking Lot/Construction

As you may now have noticed, the construction of our new Full Day Kindergarten room has begun. The construction workers will be using the parking lot closest to the yard for easy access of their trucks in and out of the lot. The other two lots are reserved for staff. We’ve had two staff cars damaged this year. Thank goodness a staff member managed to catch the person hitting the first car and so they were able to get the damages covered. Unfortunately, in the second incident, there was no witness and the staff member has had to pay for the damages out of his own pocket. If you have any information about this, please let me know immediately.

Summer Adult ESL Classes
The TDSB offers a variety of free English classes to adults who are residents of Canada or are applying for residency. The program helps build literacy, conversation and English language skills. It provides community orientation and information about available services. For those with very basic English skills, we also have bilingual courses. Instruction is provided in English and in the learner’s first language. For program and registration information visit ESL Toronto

Summer School for Students
This year TDSB is running Elementary Summer School in over 40 locations across the city. Davisville is NOT one of those locations, but this program is available to our students from Kindergarten-Grade 6. The specialized summer courses build literacy and numeracy skills through a creative and active curriculum. Tailored to support elementary students to build self-confidence and increase their engagement, summer school combines strategic academic instruction with enriching activities. Summer school begins on Tuesday July 2 or Wednesday July 3 and runs until Friday July 26. For more information, visit the TDSB Continuing Education website and select Elementary Literacy and Numeracy Programs.
