Robotics Competitions

With the use of Science and Technology, the Robotics Teams really show their skills! They go to competitions with their Tyrrell pride. The FLL team consists of 10 students who build/program a robot for a series of tasks. Each year, there is a different theme for the series of tasks. The WRO teams (2 teams of 3) build/program a robot to complete many tasks in order to earn points for the competition. The LEGO Robotics Challenge consists of 4 students who program/build a robot to complete tasks.

The Robotics teams prepare for numerous competitions:

First Lego League

(Qualifier - December and Provincials - January)

Young innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. FIRST® LEGO® League focuses on solving real-world problems such as food safety, recycling, energy, and more using STEM concepts, plus a big dose of fun.

With the guidance of two or more coaches, teams (2-10 members, grades 4-8) apply science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts to solve a real-world problem.

Teams design, build, and program a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot, then compete on a themed table-top playing field. Along their journey, students develop critical-thinking and team-building skills, build STEM self-confidence, and gain valuable perspective on the importance of failure in the learning process.  (Led by Ms. Tat, Mr. Zedzian and Ms. Wong)

World Robot Olympiad

(April)

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is an international robotics competition gathering students from Grade 5 to university from over 50 countries. Year after year, nearly 20,000 teams compete in their home country to be selected for the WRO international final. Teams composed of 2-3 students and assisted by a coach develop their creative and problem solving skills through robotics challenges. WRO challenges are to be solved using mainly LEGO components.  (Led by Mr. Zedzian and Ms. Tat)

LEGO Robotics Skills Challenge

(TDSB Qualifier March and Provincials are held in May)
