BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2024

February was Black History Month and Malvern hosted many events to celebrate black culture in our community.  The library hosted a series of learning events for various classes.  Our Peer leaders ran popcorn and movie days- both celebrating black cinema and raising $163.00 for Black Women in Motion a "Toronto-based, survivor-led, grassroots organization that empowers and supports the advancement of Black women, girls, nonbinary and gender-non-conforming survivors of gender-based violence".  On February 23rd,  Malvern hosted a very successful event our first annual "Texas BBQ and Caribbean lunch" in support of local Black-owned businesses.  Both Hutchies and Beach Hill Smokehouse made close to 200 students very happy with their delicious selections.  It was fantastic to see the cafeteria filled with students enjoying great food and music!  Finally, on February 29th , we hosted Dwayne Morgan, a multi award-winning speaker who shared his life experience growing up with two Jamaican parents in a predominantly white neighbourhood.  He challenged our students to put down their phones, pick up a book, love themselves and step off the sidelines and take front and centre in their own lives.  Thank you to all staff and students for their hard work!
