Book Fair
The Book Fair is coming - it is from Monday, December 8th to 12th. On December 8th, students in Grade 1 to 6 will have the opportunity to look at the book fair and make wishlists of a book or two that they might like to purchase. Kindergarten students are welcome to visit with parents before or after school.

After that, the bookfair will be open for sales the following times:

  • Monday - 3:15 to 3:45 pm
  • Tuesday - 8:15 to 8:45 am, 12:30 to 3:45 pm - classes will sign up for a time
  • Wednesday - 8:15 to 8:45 am, 12:30 to 3:45 pm - classes will sign up for a time
  • Thursday - 8:15 to 8:45 am, 3:15 to 7:30 pm - this is the evening of the winter concert
  • Friday - 8:15 to 8:45 am

We are looking for a few more volunteers to help out, if you think you might be available to assist with the book fair for an hour or two, any of the above times please do let Mr. Bowen know at james.bowen@tdsb.on.ca. The profits for the bookfair are helping grow our Junior Novel Groups and beginning novel collection (Grade 1 and 2).

Fall Library Update - November 14, 2025

Library News
Library Day is Changing! Our school wide library checkout block will be on Fridays now until the middle of January. If you can encourage your Norway student to bring their books back on or before Friday mornings, that would be great!
  • Overdue Books - Over the next week classroom teachers will be sending home overdue book notices to their students, please have lookout for the note, and if possible have a look around your home, even if the books are overdue from last year. We would love to have them back!
Scholastic Book Fair
The annual tradition of the book fair is coming - it will be on the week of December 8th to the 12th. We are looking for a few parents that might have some availability to volunteer for an afternoon from 12:30 to 2:45 during this week. If you are interested can you please email James - james.bowen@tdsb.on.ca. There will be some evenings including before and after our winter concert on Thursday, December 11th. The proceeds of the book fair this year will support growing our Junior Division small group novel collection as well some Grade 1 and 2 graphic novels and beginning novels.

Library Update - September 19, 2025

Monday is library check-out, a reminder to everyone to bring back their books on Monday morning. Last week we had a number of students forget their books, our rule is if students have more than 3 books out we pause check-out to encourage students to bring books back.

Just a reminder that because of the PA Day at the end of next week, our next checkout will be on Tuesday, September 30th.

If over the summer you have discovered a few overdue books for last year, we would love to have them returned.

Thanks,
James on behalf of the Norway Library Crew

Library Update and Reminders - September 12, 2025

Happy Weekend Everyone,

This is a friendly reminder that our school wide library checkout is on Monday morning, if you could please remember to return library books this Monday morning. A quick reminder that if students have more than 3 books overdue there will be a pause in their ability to check-out books.

Secondly, just a reminder that we are on the hunt for some gently used board games or materials. For example if you have some dominoes at home you are not using, or maybe a game of trouble, monopoly, we are hoping to build a collection of a few games in our game centre.

Finally, thank you to the few people that have offered up some reading time for our Grade 1 and 2 students, the program would be between 8:45 and 9:30 and I am looking to see if there are any additional community members that might be interested. I will email the entire group, including those that have already expressed interest next Friday.

Thanks Everyone and enjoy the beautiful fall weather,
James

Introductory Library Message - September 6, 2025

Welcome to another wonderful year at Norway. My name is James Bowen and I am the Special Education and Resource Teacher at Norway. I am also the Teacher Librarian.

In my Special Education and Resource role at the school I help classroom teachers and their students with literacy programming and coordinate early years support for our emerging readers. We are hoping to have a parent information night in the fall about reading strategies at Norway and ways you can engage your child in the many steps of language development. More news to come on that!

My other hat is as Teacher Librarian - in this role I do a few things. Each month I work with a different classroom on more in-depth programming. It might be novel circles, researching a big science or social studies project, or it might be coding for our Kindergarten classes. The second part is managing the weekly library check-outs. This year all classes have their library check-outs on Day 5 - the first library check-out is on Monday, September 8th. I will send out notices two days before to prepare families for the return of library books. Please look for these notices and to help keep the check-out and return of books going smoothly. If a student has more than three books checked out, we will pause library checkout for the student until the books have been returned.

Building a games centre in the library, this year, we are creating a games centre in the library for some students to use as a chill space in the library. If you might have a gently used game that your family is no longer using and you would be willing to donate it to the library that would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at James.Bowen@tdsb.on.ca to confirm if it is a game we already have a copy of.

Book Donations - every year we get offered a number of book donations by families, it can be challenging for us to take in some donations, but if you happen to have copies of popular books for example Dog Man or some graphic novels that you think your family is no longer using and they are in good condition, we might be able to use them in the library. Feel free to reach out to me at James.Bowen@tdsb.on.ca

Finally, each year we have a small group of parents that are able to volunteer in the mornings usually between 8:45 and 9:30 to help read in a one on one setting with our Grade 1 and 2 readers. If you think you might be able to help support us with this program. Please reach out to me at James.Bowen@tdsb.on.ca, once I have a group ready I will connect with the group to plan for some training around goals and working with the students.

Thank-you for reading and have a wonderful weekend,

James Bowen
