Welcome to R.H. King Academy’s English & English as a Second Language (ESL) Department!
Over four years, our aim is to help students build and refine their core language skills, with a curricular focus on reading, writing, and oral communication. Our department prioritizes the development of critical thinking skills across our courses through the examination of current and relevant written and media texts. Through a diversity of voices and perspectives, our students see themselves our curriculum and gain a greater understanding of both themselves and the world around them.
ENGLISH
Students will complete a total of four English credits to earn their diploma.
Elective English credits are also offered to students who are interested in taking extra English courses.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Students complete an initial assessment and are placed in the appropriate ESL class level, based on a combination of their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They progress through the levels until ESLD or ESLE, when they will transition to regular English classes (see above). All students need a grade 12 English credit to be accepted to college (ENG4C) or university (ENG4U) in Ontario.
