What is Horticulture and Landscaping?
This course offer students a true hands-on learning experience from starting seeds in the greenhouse, to creating gardens both in the greenhouse and in our outdoor garden area. Students will also learn how to create and build a pond, fireplace and flower boxes within the school.
What does a typical class look like?
In a typical class, sutdents have opportunities for hands-on learning of starting plants from seed, the maintenance of plants, and maintaining of the ponds within the school daily.
What can parents/care givers expect their child to learn from this program?
Parents and care givers can expect students to learn about different types of plants, the fertilizers used for different plants, weekly maintenance of plants and outdoor maintenance (example: grass cutting, weeding seasonal cleanup).
What supports are available to students?
Students will have support from both the teacher and educational assistants, on how to use all the tools, and get a hands-on experiences in the classroom necessary to learn and possibly venture into the landscaping field.
What Production Based Tasks or Experiential Learning Opportunities do students have?
Students will grow, market and sell plants throughout the year. During winter months, students market and sell Christmas cactus and poinsettias. For Valentine's day, studentse promote and sell Friendship Flowers. In the spring, students grow and sell vegetable plants at the schools yearly Open House.
