FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

What time does school start and end?

We ask for your help to ensure that your child arrives at school on time at 8:50 a.m. every day. If your child is late for school, they must report to the school office for a late slip. A staff member will escort your child to his/her classroom.

If your child needs to leave early during the school day, a parent/guardian must provide a note explaining the reason or call the school to inform us. Notes should be dated, signed and addressed to your child’s teacher. If an early pick up is requested, parents must sign out their child at the main office before taking him/her off school property.

The instructional day ends at 3:20 p.m. Please meet your child at the entry/exit door at dismissal time. Students who plan to stay late after school (for extra help, sports, clubs, etc.) are asked to arrange this with their parents/guardians in advance.

What if my child will be absent from school?

The Toronto District School Board implements a program to ensure the safe arrival of all students. If you know that your child is going to be absent or late, you can assist us by calling the school or writing a note in your child’s agenda in advance. If the office is closed, you can leave a message on the answering machine at any time of day. When leaving a message, be sure to speak clearly and include your child’s first and last name, grade, the teacher’s name and the reason why your child is late/absent. If we do not receive notification of your child’s absence/late, you will be called by an automated system.

What are the lunchtime procedures?

Our school lunch hour is 11:40 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. We encourage all children to go home for lunch when there is appropriate supervision. Going home provides children with a nice break from school, and often contributes to a more productive and positive afternoon of learning.

We have limited supervision for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 who must remain at school for lunch. Please send your child to school with a nutritious lunch, packed in reusable containers. We work hard to be a Platinum Eco School and a reduction of daily garbage is important to us.

Kindergarten students will eat lunch in their classrooms and Gr. 1-8 students will eat in the lunchrooms on the second floor. Students should remain seated and act in a quiet, calm and respectful manner during lunch. During the lunch period, students will spend time both indoors and outdoors. On inclement weather days, students will remain in the school for the entire lunch break.

All students who eat at school are required to remain on school property, in the designated supervised areas, for the entire lunch period. Students are not to leave school property unless their parent has called the school or has written a note in the student’s agenda.

What if my child has an allergy?

In January 1, 2006, Sabrina’s Law came into effect. This law requires that every school board in Ontario establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy. It also requires that schools develop plans for students at risk of anaphylaxis. As a result of this important legislation, we ask all parents/guardians to refrain from sending nut/peanut products with their children in student lunches and snacks. We have a number of students who are severely allergic to nuts/peanuts. Although we discourage these products in our school environment, we cannot guarantee that students will not be in contact with them.

As a result, all students who have been diagnosed with a serious anaphylactic allergy are required to keep their prescribed Epi-pen with them at all times, including when on school excursions. Parents/guardians are asked to ensure that their child’s Epi-pen has not expired.

What is the school dress code?

The overall purpose of the dress code is to ensure that students dress appropriately for school. We encourage students to wear the St. Margaret’s PS uniform if they have it. Inappropriate clothing consists of the following:

  • Any clothing that promotes or depicts violence, weapons, racism, drugs/alcohol or other anti-social behaviour;
  • Very short skirts/shorts;
  • Clothing that does not cover the midriff, including short cropped tops;
  • Clothing that reveals undergarments (e.g., tank tops with spaghetti straps, tops with open backs, “low riding” to show boxer shorts, etc.);
  • Bandanas, hats, hoods or other head coverings that are not worn for religious purposes. The School Dress Code expectations are in effect on school property, as well as on school excursions and other school sponsored events. Our guidelines are in place to provide a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for all of our students. Any students who do not comply with our Dress Code may be sent home to change or be provided with other appropriate school attire for the day.

When do we get student report cards?

Reporting student achievement reflects current understanding of child development, the teaching and learning process, and the importance of parental involvement. An Elementary Progress Report will be sent home in November. Detailed Report Cards will be sent home in February and June. There are two Professional Activity (PA) days, one in November and one in February, for parent/ student/teacher conferences.
