Code of Conduct

 

The following items will clarify for Burnhamthorpe students the expectations around compliance with teacher and staff instructions in and out of the classroom. Both Adult and EdVance students and all staff are to respect the school’s Code of Conduct.
 

Attendance & Punctuality


To be considered a fully participating Burnhamthorpe student you are expected to be in attendance every day and to be on time. Absences will be excused only with proper medical or legal documentation. Persistent and unexplained absenteeism is a violation of the schools’ Code of Conduct.
Respectful Verbal Language and Body Language towards Teachers, Administration and Support Staff
Teachers, administration and support staff are the authorities in charge of ensuring safety and discipline in the school. All students are expected to use respectful verbal and body language when communicating with those in authority. Failure to comply is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.

 

Burnhamthorpe ID Card


Burnhamthorpe students may be required to take a picture ID for the current school year. Students are to have the ID card on their person when in the building. All staff and teachers have the right to ask students to confirm identification when on school property or involved in a school sponsored activity. When stopped and asked by staff to identify self, students are to produce the Burnhamthorpe picture ID or their timetable immediately. At the beginning of each Quad, students must produce a valid school ID card or other suitable identification to receive any school supplies, including textbooks, timetables or library books. All borrowed materials must be returned at the end of each quad. Failure to comply is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.

 

Cell Phones, Pages and Other Personal Communication Devices


Cell phone use is allowed in the halls. Personal electronic devices must not interrupt learning. Electronic devices are used at the owner’s risk. The school is not responsible for lost/stolen electronic devices. Failure to comply is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.

 

Use of School Computers and Other Electronic Equipment


When working in the library or computer labs as a class, students are expected to follow the teacher’s instructions and focus on the work as assigned. Computers are to be used for academic purposes only. When using the library or labs on personal time, students are to ensure that websites visited and displayed on screen follow the TDSB and Burnhamthorpe Code of Online Conduct. At no time should the screen display inappropriate images, words, or anything that would be deemed inappropriate. In addition, when playing audio files on the computer or any musical devise, students are expected to use headphones and ensure that the sound is not heard by others. Failure to comply with the above is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.

 

Harassment and Bullying


Any verbal communication or physical engagement that makes someone feel uncomfortable or unsafe will be deemed harassment and/or bullying. All Burnhamthorpe staff and students will refrain from any such acts, particularly when directly asked to stop. Failure to comply is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.

 

Vandalism


The defacing, theft or destruction of school property may result in suspension or retirement from Burnhamthorpe or criminal charges. Failure to comply is a violation of the school’s Code of Conduct.
