What is MPLAR?
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition for Mature Students
- A pathway for mature students (18+) to earn the necessary credits for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
- A formal process to gain high school credits for knowledge and skills learned outside of the traditional school setting.
- Students can earn a maximum of 26 credits (Combined grade 9/10/11/12)
How It Works
Eligibility:
- Students must be at least 18 years old to participate in MPLAR.
- Students must be registered in a TDSB continuing education program during the MPLAR process.
Grade 9/10 Individual Assessment/Equivalency Process:
Mature students with fewer than 16 credits may need to complete individual assessments for Grade 9 and 10 subjects including English, Math, History, Geography and Science.
Grade 11/12 Equivalency/Challenge Process:
Mature students with 16 or more credits can earn Grade 11/12 credits by completing a mature student PLAR package and demonstrating prior learning through life and work experience.
Documentation: Evidence of formal and informal learning is required. Examples may include:
- Work experience and job-related training
- Transcripts from previous education
- Apprenticeship programs
- Volunteer experience
- Certifications, letters of appraisal, and resumes
In all cases, the knowledge and skills gained through education, work experience, and training must be directly related to the Provincial Curriculum Expectations.
Required Final Credits:
Students must earn the last 4 credits by studying and completing courses, as MPLAR credits are not sufficient on their own for a diploma.
