April

Hello Crerar Families,

Sikh Heritage Month is proudly recognized at the TDSB during the month of April since 2016 as the Board of Trustees voted to designate April the month as Sikh Heritage Month making the TDSB the first school board in Canada to do so.  Sikh Heritage Month is recognized nationally across Canada and here at Crerar as well! Sikh Canadians have lived in Ontario since the turn of the twentieth century.  They have made significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of Ontario and their traditions and culture continue to be a vibrant part of every aspect of the life of Canadians today.

Latin-America History Month is proudly recognized at the TDSB during the month of April. This year the theme to mark Latin-America History Month is Weaving Our Legacies: Returning to our Collective Path / Enlazar Nuestres Legados: Volver A Nuestre Camino Colectivo. Their significant contributions to Canadian society, from business, innovation, academics, arts, science, and moe, have made our country more resilient.

Thank you everyone who contributed to our school pantry. The class who contributed the most items was Ms. Kelly's Grade 1 class, followed by Mme. Jean-Charles' Grade 7/8 class. Both classes will receive a class prize provided by the Parent Council. Well done to all classes. If your family requires some assistance with food or other household products, please feel free to drop by the office during school hours to look at our pantry and select items for your family. Our next Parent Council meeting is scheduled for April 4 at 9 a.m. We will be meeting in the school library. For those who can only join virtually, please Click here to join the meeting.

I am happy to share that General Crerar will be getting a new playground and a renewal of our open space. This will be Phase 1 of the construction which will start in the month of May. Speaking of open space, on May 29, we encourage families to drop by the school between 2:00-4:30 pm for our Eco Fair. The purpose of this event is to deepen our school communities’ learning, understanding and action to combat climate change. For our students and staff, this is an extension of the ongoing learning that has been happening all year at General Crerar as the Eco Team reminds us of our human connection and responsibility to care for the land as we acknowledge it and learn from Indigenous people.

Members of Winston Churchill CI’s Eco Team and Science Team will be joining us, as well as several local organizations and agencies set up in the yard to share their resources with students, staff, families, and community members. This is to help connect the community with organizations they resonate with so that they can start to take small steps in supporting the environment against climate change.

This is a friendly reminder that April 8th is a PA Day. There will be no school for students for students in order for students to stay safe during the solar eclipse. Staff will be participating in professional learning that day. This will mean that there will be school on April 19 as the PA Day scheduled for that day, will be cancelled.

Warmest regards,

Ms. Lin
