Health and Wellness SHSM
The Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an exciting opportunity for students to explore careers in the growing Health and Wellness sector while earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The program allows students to customize their high school experience through specialized courses, certifications, experiential learning opportunities, and career-focuses activities.
Students in the Health and Wellness SHSM develop valuable knowledge and
skills related to areas such as health promotion, fitness and wellness, mental
health, nutrition, community health, personal support, and the broader
healthcare sector. Students also have opportunities to earn industry-recognized
certifications and participate in experiential learning that connects classroom
learning to the workplace.
The SHSM can help prepare students for a wide variety of college,
university, apprenticeship, and workplace pathways, including careers in
nursing, medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, personal support work,
fitness and recreation, social services, child and youth care, nutrition,
public health, and many other health and wellness-related fields.
Whether students already have a specific career in mind, or are simply
interested in learning more about the Health and Wellness sector, the SHSM
provides an opportunity to gain practical experience and explore future career
pathways while still in high school.
