Expectation of Students

HALL & SPARE PASS

Instructional time is valuable, so students should be in class for the entire period. If it is absolutely necessary for a student to leave the classroom:

  • Students will not be dismissed during the first 15 and last 15 mins of class.
  • Only 1 student will be allowed to leave the classroom at any given time.
  • Any student being dismissed from class MUST have their teacher’s hall pass with them.
  • Students are responsible for the hall pass when they borrow it from their teacher.
  • Students are expected to show the hall pass when they are in the halls if any staff requests it.
  • Students may be required to sign in and out of class.
  • Only Gr 12 students are allowed to have a spare and must have at least 24 credits to have a spare.
  • Students on spare are expected to be in the library or cafeteria and are not allowed to be loitering in the halls or bathrooms.
  • Students with spares will be provided a Spare Pass that will be signed by their Vice Principal and will be expected to show it when they are asked by any staff member.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES

Instructions regarding assemblies will be announced on voice call from the office.  All students are expected to attend, even if they are on a spare.  Students need to show proper courtesy and respect for the speakers and the programs presented during assemblies.

STUDENT DRESS POLICY

What is the Student Dress Policy?

The Student Dress Policy has been developed to provide students with learning environments that are safe, equitable, welcoming and inclusive.  The Student Dress Policy also recognizes that decisions about dress reflect individual expression of identity, socio-cultural norms, economic factors and are personal and important factors to a person’s well-being and health.

Students may attend school and school-related functions in dress of their choice that conforms to system standards that respect the Board’s intent to sustain a community that is positive, anti-oppressive, equitable, accepting, and inclusive of a diverse range of social and cultural identities. Student dress must:

  • Be worn in such a way that all bottom layers cover groin and buttocks and top layers cover nipples, both with opaque material.
  • Tops may expose shoulders, abdomen, midriff, neck lines and cleavage.
  • Bottoms may expose legs, thighs, and hips.   Undergarments may not be substituted as outwear and, if worn, should be worn beneath a layer of outer wear.  Straps and waistbands may be exposed, however any headwear that does not obscure the face may be worn.
  • Conform with established health and safety requirements for the intended activity (e.g., health and physical education classes, science and chemistry classes, sporting events, technical education, drama/dance classes, etc.)
  • Respect the Board’s intent to sustain a community that is positive, anti-oppressive, equitable, accepting, and inclusive of a diverse range of social and cultural identities.
  • Not promote offensive, lewd, vulgar, or obscene images or language, including profanity, hate and pornography.
  • Not promote, nor could not be construed as or include content that is discriminatory (e.g., racist, anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, classist, ableist, sizeist, etc.), or that reasonably could be construed as defamatory, threatening, harassing, or promoting bias, prejudice or hate.
  • Not symbolize, suggest, display or reference: tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, drugs or related paraphernalia, promotion or incitement of violence or any illegal conduct or criminal activities.
  • Not interfere with the safe operation of the school, limit or restrict the rights of others, or create a reasonably foreseeable risk of such interference or invasion of rights; (e.g., except for creed accommodations and safety requirements, no head wear may obscure the face, all other head wear may be worn);

To this end, all students may not wear anything that promotes or symbolizes drugs, alcohol, illegal activity, hate or discrimination, profanity, pornography; or that incites violence or harassment; or threatens health and safety.

DRUGS/ALCOHOL

Users of these substances endanger their own and others’ health and welfare.  The use of drugs and alcohol during school-sponsored activities and events is strictly prohibited.  The use, possession, and/or selling of such substances will result in parent/guardian/caregiver notification, suspension and possible police involvement.  A positive school climate and a safe learning and teaching environment are essential for student success. Everyone has a role to play in promoting a positive school climate.

Smoking or Vaping on School Property is Prohibited.

Minimum age is 19

You must be 19 and older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario.

You cannot smoke or vape tobacco or cannabis at school, on school grounds, and all public areas within 20 meters of playgrounds.  Possession of cannabis or alcohol is not permitted on school grounds or school related activities.  Being under the influence of cannabis or alcohol is strictly prohibited.   Giving cannabis or alcohol to a minor is illegal.

Did you Know?

  • Giving or sharing a cigarette with anyone under 19 could cost you $490.
  • Smoking/holding lighted tobacco/vaping anywhere on School property could cost you $305.
  • This law is in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act is intended to reduce the number of children and teens who start smoking and to protect Ontarians from second-hand smoke.

EXCURSIONS

Excursions provide worthwhile educational experiences and are an important part of Weston’s program.  Students involved in an excursion are responsible for all work covered in other courses while they are on the trip and should make arrangements with their individual subject teachers in advance of the trip.  Excursion participants are governed by the same regulations that apply in the school and will have the same consequences.

Costs for excursions are often the responsibility of the participating students.  Every effort will be made by the staff to keep costs to a minimum.  Students will be advised well in advance of the cost for any given trip, and they will be given parental permission forms, which must be returned to the teacher in charge prior to the trip. Attendance, discipline and academic success may be taken into consideration when permission is being granted for excursions.

LOCKERS

Lockers are the property of the school, not students.  Each student may occupy only one locker.  Combination locks only must be used.  They may be purchased from the Main Office. Students are responsible for the appearance of the inside and the outside of their locker. Students should be aware that the administration may inspect any locker at any time it is deemed necessary.  Students are not permitted access to lockers after hours or on weekends.  Disfigurement of a locker is vandalism.  Students need to inform their Period 1 teachers of their locker combinations.  Students should not share lockers or lock combinations with others. Combinations are to be kept confidential to prevent loss of personal property and to avoid misuse of lockers. Students are responsible for their own valuables.  Do not leave them in your lockers or the change rooms.

LOST AND FOUND

Lost articles are usually taken first to the Main Office.  Students will have to pay full replacement cost for lost or damaged school books and equipment.  Put your name in your books and on your gym equipment.  Valuables may be left in the office during the day for safekeeping, if absolutely necessary.  The school cannot and will not be responsible for electronic devices, wallets, watches, and other valuables left in the change rooms, in lockers, or in other school facilities, including classrooms and the Library Resource Centre.

LUNCH PERIOD

Please place your waste in the appropriate recycling bins or garbage cans. Students are encouraged to eat lunch in the cafeteria.

RECYCLING

Weston prides itself on being environmentally friendly, but we need your help. We intend to recycle 70% of all our waste materials. Each classroom is equipped with a box for paper recycling. Almost any type of paper, except construction paper and facial tissue, can be discarded in these boxes. It is also in the Cafeteria that we need the most help.  Please put tins, bottles, juice boxes and paper in the big blue bins. Please do not put food or plastic in any blue/grey recycling bin.

MEDICAL FORMS & RESPONSES

Any student who suffers from allergies, asthma, anaphylactic shock or any other medical condition is to specify details of the condition on the school Medical Information Form. Every student must complete a Medical Form each year to reflect any changes in medical conditions. These forms are kept on file in the office for quick reference. Two EPI-pens are available in the office should a student require this medication. It is expected that a student susceptible to anaphylactic shock will have their own EPI-pen available at all times.

Staff will respond to medical emergencies by calling the office to request an administrator, and identifying the student, problem and location where help is needed. The administrator’s response will be to attend the scene as quickly as possible, keep in touch with the office by radio and determine if an ambulance, EPI-pen or other response is required. Site personnel who are trained in First Aid and CPR may also attend the scene. Parents/guardians/caregivers will be notified as quickly as possible, to advise them of the student’s condition and the action taken.
