Cross Country 2024

Cross Country is a sport that ALL students can participate in, and be part of a HUGE John Wanless team!

All students (grades 1- 6) will be training on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Parents are always welcome! You can run with your child, supervise runners on the sidewalk, or be cheerleaders!

Practice Info…
When: The Season Opening will be on Monday , September 9th @ 7:50 a.m. for ALL grades.

The remaining practices will be: Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings at 7:50 a.m.

Practices will be cancelled if it is raining – cancellations will be posted here.

Where: Meet on the pavement by the main door stairs for morning

Race checklist

  1. TDSB Permission Form
  2. In-Person Race Registration (Monday, Sept. 25th and Wed. Sept 27th)
  3. Regular Attendance at training.

 North Area Meet: Tuesday, October 2nd, 2024

EARL BALES PARK (Sheppard & Bathurst)

***All Grade 1 – 6 runners

If your child requires an EpiPen or puffer ensure that they have it on them. 

8:45 a.m. All runners go to their first period class for attendance then GRADE 1-3 RUNNERS immediately go to the Big Gym, find their parent group leader sheet on the wall and sit with their group.
9:00 a.m. Runners will be organized into their bus seating and wait for the buses to arrive.
9:15 a.m. Students leave by school buses to Earl Bales Park.  Parent leaders will drive to the park and meet the runners at the bus/JW tent area.
10:00  Races begin and GRADE 4-6 RUNNERS proceed to BIG GYM to get organized with teacher coaches for school bus departure. Races will continue (see back for approximate schedule). 
11:00 a.m to

 

1:00 p.m

Staggered return to John Wanless will begin. Grades 1 and 2 should be back in time for lunch dismissal, however it is recommended that ALL students bring a lunch in case of delays. 

 TRY TO CARPOOL – LOTS ARE VERY BUSY!) and meet at Earl Bales Park @ the JW tent near the finish line.

CHILDREN CANNOT LEAVE THE PARK WITH THEIR PARENTS, AS THIS CAUSES CONFUSION WHEN TAKING ATTENDANCE ON THE SCHOOL BUSES AT DEPARTURE TIME.

Important Reminders

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

  1. All students must wear appropriate clothing and layers for the weather.       Students are advised to wear shorts under their sweats as they will get quite warm running the race.
  2. All students are recommended to bring a LUNCH!!!
  3. Hats, umbrellas and sunblock help prevent overexposure to the elements.
  4. Have your racer(s) wear their JW Athletics t-shirt if they own one (then they will not need to wear a school pinnie).

NOTICE OF CANCELLATION WILL BE POSTED at www.johnwanless.ca on the Cross Country page by 7:15 a.m.

 The top 4 teams & the top 40 runners in grades 3-6 will qualify for the Conference Championship. This will be held on October 18th  at Earl Bales Park.

North Conference Meet Information

Thursday, October 17th, 2024

Grade 3 Girls to race first at 10:30 a.m., followed by the grade 3 boys, grade 4 girls, etc.

Races will run quickly so athletes are advised to arrive around 9:30 a.m. to check in at JW tent to receive race number and pinnie if needed.

Check the "Important Reminders" (listed above) to help your child be prepared.

City Championships are on October 23rd The top 3 teams and top 20 individual runners (not part of a team) will in grades 4-6 will qualify for the City Championships. They will be held at Sunnybrook Park.

 

PARKING:
There are over 350 parking spots at Earl Bales, but they will fill up early (by 10:00 am)
Parents may park on the following roads for up to 3 hours (if tires are chalked) without receiving a ticket:

SOUTH - Timberlane Drive Parking on both sides of the street
NORTH - Don Valley Blvd enter South of Sheppard and turn right into a large parking lot. Short walk up a
hill on a paved path to the start line
WEST - Bainbridge Ave - parking OK past Yeomans Rd
Ellison Ave - parking on South side only
Danby Ave - parking on North side past Yeomans Rd
Yeomans Rd - parking on both sides
Reiner Rd - parking OK on South side
McAllister - parking OK on South side and both sides past Yeomans Rd
Harlock Blvd - parking OK on both sides
Hammell St - parking OK on grass
Alexis Blvd - parking OK on both sides.

CITY CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

When: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd 2024 (RAIN OR SHINE – hopefully shine!)

What happens on the day of City Finals…

9:30 a.m. Students should arrive at Sunnybrook Park.  CHECK IN WITH SHERWOOD/BLANEY AT THE JW TENT UPON ARRIVAL SO RACERS CAN RECEIVE THEIR RACE NUMBER AND PINNIE. JW TENT WILL BE LOCATED NEAR THE BASEBALL DIAMOND.
