Dear Northern Families,

Another busy week at Northern! Thank You to our WellNSS team and Guidance department for putting on an amazing series of events for Teen Mental Health Week!

I highly encourage you to keep an eye out for this opportunity next year. Thanks to the Science Department for making the event happen!

Yesterday the Sounds of Spring Concert took place on the back field. A sizeable audience took in 17 fantastic performances along with a hotdog and drink. Another event to add to your calendar next year. Thank You to the Music Council and Department for a great show!

Congratulations to the incoming 2025-26 Student Council Members who were elected this week. A huge thank you to everyone who ran in the hotly contested elections! Next year’s council members are:

Congratulations to Jack G., Stephanie K., Axelle M-C., Jing Z. and Olena Z., who each qualified for and participated in the provincial finals of the French Public Speaking Contest / Le Concours d'art oratoire on Saturday, May 3rd at the Glendon Campus of York University. Some notable finishes include Axelle M-C., who placed 3rd overall in the province in the Francophone category, and Jing Z., who placed 2nd overall in the province in the Core French category. Félicitations!

OJEN Mock Trial Competition:

Congratulations to Northern Law Society's mock trial team, the "Ruby Guardians", for coming in 2nd place at the OJEN Mock Trial Competition on May 5th. The competition started with 32 teams from across Toronto our team competed in the semi-final and final matches which ended at 9:30 pm.

In the semi-final Mock Trial, our defense team provided an exceptional defense of the accused. The defense team created enough doubt in the opposing Crown's arguments that the judges had no choice but to find the accused "Not Guilty" which allowed us to advance to the finals.

At the final Mock Trial, our Crown team provided a fantastic argument which attempted to prove the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Unfortunately, the judges did not agree and our intrepid team of lawyers and witnesses came in 2nd place.

Congratulations Olena Z., Lyla J., Rowan C., Rye C., Brandon L., Declan C., Blayze G., Maya P. and Axelle M.-C. for coming 2nd in all of Toronto.

Their hard work and dedication was evident throughout the year and we are all extremely proud of their achievements. Go Ruby Guardians!

Computer-Aided Design is a cornerstone of the industrial and engineering sectors, enabling professionals to develop precise designs, specifications, and models for mechanical components and systems. In this competition, participants showcased their core CAD skills by applying them to a real-world project, demonstrating both technical expertise and creative problem-solving.”

Final Exams

It is never too early to start thinking about final exams!

Final exams run from June 18-23, 2025. The moratorium period begins on Thursday June 12. There will be no excursions or athletic events during this period.

You can find information about the culminating activities and final exams for each course here (organized by grade) here: NSS Culminating and Final Exam Information Sem 2 2025.

You can find a detailed exam schedule here: NSS Exam Schedule - Semester 2 2024-25

The schedule follows this format:

Students will follow their Day 1 schedule as follows for exams:

Wednesday, June 18 - Period 1 Exam

Thursday, June 19 - Period 2 Exam

Friday, June 20 - Period 3 Exam

Monday, June 23 - Period 4 Exam

ALL exams will begin at 10:00 am.  Exam duration will vary by subject/year.  Looking ahead, students should make sure they eat a good breakfast as they will eat a “late” lunch on these days once exams are over (late relative to our usual 11:40 am lunchtime).

Please take some time to look through our Exam ReadiNSS site for information and resources.  More information will be added as exams approach – including some in person exam preparation sessions provided by our student services and special education departments.

CULMINATING TASKS AND EXAMS

Culminating activities and examinations carry the same importance and the same attendance requirement. Thus, attendance during culminating activities is mandatory. Some courses have culminating activities that take place over several days. Thus, attendance during culminating activities/summative evaluations is mandatory. A culminating activity is the final evaluation in each course which is worth 30% of the final mark. “This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content” (p.41-Growing Success). Students who miss culminating activities or summative evaluations will be given a mark of zero for the portion missed with no opportunity to make up the missed work unless there is an extenuating and documented circumstance, such as a medical situation, court date, funeral etc. It is absolutely crucial that students do not miss any time during the end of a semester. Under Ministry of Education and TDSB regulations, there can be no accommodations made for students who miss the 30% culminating activities and summative evaluations at the end of a semester for personal reasons such as vacation or work. Students and parents should be aware that scheduled vacations at this time can significantly impact student achievement. With the exception of a medical emergency, all summative tests and assignments that are missed as a result of these absences will be assigned a mark of zero.

School Council:

1. On-going TDSB Budget development process. You can find detailed information on the TDSB Budget website. Trustee Laskin provides an extensive analysis of budget issues in her most recent newsletter. There are also a number of groups organizing around various budget issues. The campaign to Save TDSB pools led by Josh Matlow is still open. A campaign to encourage trustees to reject further cuts is also ongoing. The province has yet to disclose their funding formula for the next school year, so this process will continue to evolve. During delegations last week, Trustees heard from many folks including two Northern students who spoke eloquently about the need to maintain guidance staffing as their support of student mental health is invaluable. We encourage students and their families to continue to speak up about the issues that matter most to them.

2. School Council meeting - Thursday, May 22nd at 6:30 pm - virtual. We welcome all members of the school community to join us for the final meeting of the school year. This meeting will be virtual only to accommodate ongoing work on the school boiler system. To receive the meeting link, please send a request to nss.school.council@gmail.com with the subject line "School Council Meeting Link." The link will be sent by 5 pm the day of the meeting.

Help Wanted: The Student Nutrition Program is looking for three new Parent Volunteers for the 2025/2026 school year. This program offers free healthy lunches to registered students throughout the school year. The time commitment is 10:30-12:30 one or more days a week to prepare and serve food to students.
