Northern Secondary School

June 19th, 2020

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 11:33 AM

Good Evening Northern Families,

Northern staff volunteers delivered 385 packages to graduating students this week from the School and School Council. Thank you to everyone that took part in this initiative- it was a ton of fun to see students all over the city!

The government made some announcements about September for schools today. For the latest message from the Director, please click here . There is much more detail to be worked through from the Ministry to board to school level. Please stay tuned to these bulletins and other media outlets for updates as they become available. We will put out information regarding school start up as soon as we are able via this email list.

I have had many inquiries about dropping off books. We will be able to accept book drop offs on Thursday June 25th between 9am and 3pm. Please go to the north lobby entrance doors (where the gravel walkway is) to line up. Please see below for details on protocol if you plan to drop of textbooks, instruments etc.

In case you missed it, there was an important email from the TDSB sent out yesterday regarding report cards. The key pieces are here:

Due to the current school closures resulting from COVID-19, final report cards will be distributed to TDSB students and parents/guardians in a digital format using School Messenger, an email communication system currently used by schools.

As per Ontario Student Records (OSR) guidelines, a signed, printed copy of the report card will be filed in the OSR when schools reopen.

The TDSB will take the following steps to deliver a report card for each student in a secure manner:

  1. You will receive an email with the report card attached as a password-protected PDF file.
  • Secondary report cards will be emailed to both parents/guardians and students’ TDSB email address between July 3 - 8.
  1. The password will be unique for each report card.
  2. The password format will be communicated in each email, not the password itself.

On Tuesday June 23rd from 6:30-7:30 I will be hosting an online principal’s update- this is the sort of information sharing typically done at a school council meeting. If you would like to be sent a link to the meeting please email me at adam.marshall@tdsb.on.ca and I email it to you directly. I will be focussing on the experience at the school end during the COVID closure and addressing the uncertainty that the fall holds. We of course continue to wait and see what the Ministry direction will be for this. Trustee Rachel Chernos Lin will also be holding a Ward Forum next Thursday- please find information here .

In this unprecedented school year there are many normal procedures that can’t be followed. One of those is saying goodbye and thank you to staff at a student assembly. In place of this, here are some changes at Northern that either have taken effect, or will take effect at the end of next week. Each of these people deserves better than a name listed in a bulletin, but I want to be mindful of volume of content. I want to say a special thank you to our retiring colleagues and those moving onto Positions of Responsibility in other buildings. Congratulations! You will all be missed- the contributions you have made to Northern are impossible to measure. Thank You for your commitment to public education, and good luck in the future.

Students may be contacted by guidance next week to sort out course conflicts for next year. Please make sure you reply/ respond to ensure you have the best choices possible.

Information for Students Leaving TDSB: TDSB accounts for graduating students or students leaving the TDSB will also be made inactive after the summer, in September. To prepare students for this transition they will need to either move/download the content using Google Takeout or use Google Transfer to move content to their personal Google account. Grade 12 students have also received this information through an email.

Celebrating Debating Team Success:

Diba Heydary and Max Rosen won the 2020 Canadian Senior National Debating Championships. Max was the tournament's Top Speaker and Diba placed fifth. Max and Diba led Ontario to the John Baty Trophy for the strongest showing by Province or Territory.

Jaleelah Ammar and Taneshq Bomman also qualified and competed admirably at this year's tournament.

To send two teams from one school to Nationals and to compete so well at such a high level is an incredible feat!

Congratulations to Jaleelah, Taneshq, Diba and Max!

Remote Credit Recovery Summer School:

Available only to TDSB students.

Registration Closes: June 26, 2020 at 12:00 noon

The Continuing Education Department is offering a Remote Credit Recovery Summer School Program for TDSB secondary students only from July 6 to July 31.

  • This program allows students to “recover” the credit in a course in which they were unsuccessful within the last two school years.
  • It is a NEW summer program and will be delivered only online.
  • The Remote Summer Credit Recovery Program focuses not on time, but on the overall expectations the student must attain before earning the credit. For example, if a student completes the overall expectations successfully before July is over, they will no longer need to attend the Remote Credit Recovery class (as determined by their teacher).
  • Students are able to recover more than one course through this program.
  • Interested students need to connect with their guidance counsellor to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria so that the home school can get the necessary credit recovery paperwork completed.
  • Students in Grades 9 to 12 register for the credit recovery program through e-Reg by selecting RCR1O1.

  • Full credit courses will be offered remotely for those wishing to take a course for the first time or those who wish to retake the full course.
