Good Evening Northern Families,

By the time you return to school on Tuesday we will be a month away from the end of school. Students- make sure you have mapped out your work on a calendar and are as organized as possible. Time will pass quickly- stay on top of your work and really push over this last month. If you aren’t sure where they are, look for your textbooks and be prepared to return them shortly. Thank You!

A lot of excitement this past week as extra-curriculars really ramp up.

Thank You to Mr. Newman, Ms. Peng, and all our musicians for an amazing Sounds of Spring Concert this week. Even the rain couldn’t take your enthusiasm away!

Today Northern had NINE athletes qualify for OFSSAA (provincial championships) tennis!

Wednesday and Thursday were Track and Field South regionals where Northern had many individual successes and took home the Overall, and Boys Overall titles.

Our boy’s soccer team finished second at the South Regional Championships this week.

Yesssss Red Knights! What a week. Thank you to every student that tried out, participated, and became involved in the life of the school outside the classroom. If you didn’t have the chance to this year, I challenge you to choose at least ONE extra-curricular to be involved in next year. And of course thank you to all our coaches, staff sponsors, directors and more. Conversation Starters: (follow-up and a new starter)

Follow Up: Do you have any control over the parts of your identity you discussed over the past several weeks? Are any of the components yours to decide upon? Or are they just part of you? Put another way, which ones did you choose, and which ones just “are”?

  1. thoughts: In many cases our identity depends on things we are born with/ into. In others, we decide what groups we want to affiliate with, activities we are involved in and so on. Thinking through these pieces is sometimes challenging- perception (the reason I said talking to others is important) is key. You might identify yourself as middle class, but to someone else you could be considered extremely wealthy. times we can decide we don’t like something about our identity and can change it- think about a group of friends, a team, a hobby etc that just isn’t doing it for you anymore. You grow and move onto something/ someone new- it’s not always easy but it can be done. Other parts of your identity are not malleable. Country of origin, race, ethnicity, for many religion.

This Week’s Conversation Starter: Have you ever wanted to change something about your identity that represents the latter group above? The things that can’t change- they just are. Why would you want to change that? Was it something you wanted to change because YOU decided you want change? Or did you see, hear, experience something that influenced you to want change? Was it an experience that was hurtful?

If you answered no here, recognize the privilege you have. You are fortunate. But not in a way to be embarrassed or ashamed of- the end game is that we want EVERYONE to have this privilege- it SHOULD be an automatic. Be brave and take steps to help everyone around you to enjoy the same privilege- stand up to hate.

N.S.S. Cooperative Education Partners Wanted

Cooperative Education at Northern is made possible each year through the continuing support of placement supervisors, local businesses and employers. Strong community partnerships are essential in providing our students with the rich, relevant work experiences a good placement can provide.

As a Cooperative Education Partner, you can play a valuable role in helping a Northern student develop skills, knowledge and work habits they will remember and refer to throughout their lives. As well, these partnerships are mutually beneficial as our students will bring new ideas, fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and additional support to your workplace.

We have a number of Northern students looking for Co-op placements in a variety of fields starting in mid-September, 2022/23. If you are interested in becoming a placement supervisor for one of our students or know of a local business opportunity, please email john.giles@tdsb.on.ca or linda.duffy@tdsb.on.ca to learn about how you can become a Northern Cooperative Education Partner.

Lumenus Community Services provides a registered psychotherapist , Dale Callender, on-site, full time at Northern, to work in partnership with the existing school support services. The service uses an early intervention model and supports students by allowing them easy and immediate access to mental health and counselling services provided through the In-School service. Dale Callender works in collaboration with TDSB staff in order to customize supports to enhance the mental health services that they may need and wish to access. This program allows Northern priority access to Lumenus’ mental health service program, and offers students a seamless referral process to other community programs as dictated by their individual needs.
