It was Dale Callender’s final day with Lumenus today. This is not a goodbye, but certainly a big adjustment for us all. We all wish Dale the very best on his new adventures!

Math Contests:

2023 Euclid Math Contest hosted by uWaterloo

The NSS Math Department is excited to be running the 2023 Euclid Math Contest hosted by the University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing. The Euclid Contest is designed with grade 12 students in mind, but open to students in grades 9-11 who are looking for a challenge.

Contest date: Tues. April 4

Registration due: Fri. March 3

Registration fee: $19 (once registration closes)

2023 Fryer, Galois, and Hypatia Math Contests

The NSS Math Department is excited to be running the Fryer (gr. 9), Galois (gr. 10), and Hypatia (gr. 11) Math Contests hosted by the University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing. These contests are open to all students in Grades 9-11!

Contest date: Wed. April 5

Registration due: Mon. March 6

Registration fee: $13 (once registration closes)

1) University Admissions: What Every Parent Should Know - Monday, February 27, 7-8 pm - Join Teo Salgado, an independent educational consultant to learn more about this crucial point in your child’s educational journey. He will provide an overview of the university admissions process and discuss factors to consider in choosing universities. He will review the various elements of admission applications and reveal how your student can prepare a winning application. He will also cover the many ways you can finance post-secondary education, including scholarships and grants. Click here to join.

2) How to Manage Another's Anxiety - Tuesday, February 28 at 7 pm - Discuss ways to help your child manage their anxiety and stress in healthy ways. Learn to create safety in communication with your kids through empathy and attunement, so they will come to you when they need your guidance. Presented by Pine River's Center for Family Initiatives. Save the Date Northern!

Guidance is hosting a live presentation on OSAP and Financing your Post Secondary Education at lunch on Wednesday, March 29 at noon. It's a late start day so the presentation will start at the beginning of lunch and it's a 30-45 minute presentation. The presentation will be given by Robyn Papoff, George Brown College.

This is designed to help students understand the what the ins and outs of the OSAP program are including, eligibility, how to apply, loans and bursaries, where the money comes from, repayment, interest relief (Repayment Assistance Plan), etc.

HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America- Fall Leadership Conference 2022

If you are interested in participating in health science competitions at HOSA’s Spring Leadership Conference (SLC) taking place on May 17 and 18, 2023, in Downtown Toronto, join Northern’s HOSA Club. The last day to register, pay, and change your event/teammate information is March 17 at 11:59 pm. The top three competitors/teams from each event will be offered the opportunity to compete at the International Leadership Conference taking place June 21-24 2023 in Dallas, TX

    1. Students will complete their course selection for the 2023-2024 year through www.myblueprint.ca/tdsb. All students have an account and access to this course selection tool.

  1. BLACK MENTAL HEALTH - WEDNESDAY TALK SERIES
    The Professional Support Services Mental Health and Well Being Committee have organized a Talk Series on Wednesdays beginning February 8th, 2023.
    The Talk Series will center the importance of understanding and discussing Black mental health and well being. We hope these discussions build capacity in understanding Black mental health, the impact of racialized trauma and connections to culturally responsive and identity affirming supports in the community.

  1. Opting-Out of the e-Learning Graduation Requirement
    Students may withdraw from the online e-Learning requirement. A parent/caregiver/guardian or student (18 years of age or older or 16 or 17 years of age and withdrawn from parental control) may withdraw by submitting the TDSB Opt Out/Withdrawal Form to their school. No explanation or reason is needed to opt out/withdraw.

If you are not ready to make a decision with regard to participating in e-Learning, there will be future opportunities to participate in e-Learning courses or withdraw from the graduation requirement. A final decision is not required at this time.

If you have decided now to withdraw from the graduation requirement, please complete the TDSB Opt Out/Withdrawal Form.

  1. Upcoming Scholarship Deadline: March 1, 2023

    The Lieutenant Governor's Award for Student Volunteers
    Will be awarded to one graduating student from Northern who has demonstrated outstanding community service. Students must submit their volunteer experience, along with a letter of reference, to be considered for application.


Ontario Volunteer Service Award
Northern can nominate a student who has shown dedication to volunteering at Northern Secondary School. Students must submit their volunteer experience, along with a letter of reference, to be considered for application.

 

  1. SCHULICH BUILDERS SCHOLARSHIPS
    Schulich Builders are scholarships for students enrolling in an eligible, full-time skilled trades program at a participating college in Ontario. Ten colleges award a total of 100 scholarships annually. Each college will award ten scholarships: Five for one-year certificate programs, Five for two-year diploma programs

Valued at $40,000 ($20,000 per academic year), these scholarships support the costs of tuition, tools and living expenses.
