Good Afternoon Northern Families,

Welcome to our incoming families- I will be sending this bulletin to you starting today. There is NO essential reading for you here at this time, but if you want to get a flavour for what lies ahead next year, this is the weekly communication we get out on Fridays.

It has been an unbearably warm week. Thank you to all our students for making do in less than ideal conditions. Next week looks to be a little better!

During all this heat….Tuesday was our Spring Athletic Assembly. Last night we had an overhauled Northern Lights Arts and Technology evening this which was a real hit. Thank You to our artists, students, and staff for making this show such a success. It has been a busy week on the sports field as well- some details below but several of our teams are headed to OFSSAA! Finally we had our Student Activity Council Carnival today during lunch. Thank you to our volunteers and all the students who made it a success.

Next week is Northern’s Pride Week! GSA will be fundraising for a charity called Rainbow Railroad which aims to help 2SLGTBQ+ individuals escape countries with restrictive rules regarding 2SLGTBQ+ rights (https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/about). During the week, GSA students will provide information over the announcements. Students will be selling buttons, stickers and pins. On Wednesday, the GSA will host a bake sale in the main foyer. Please join us in raising funds to support 2SLGTBQ+ communities here and abroad.

There is a Joint Ward Forum focussed on budget being held next week. Details HERE .

Please see an update from Lumenus and its future operations with/ at Northern HERE .

Reminder: Please ask your student if they have completed the Student Census Survey for the TDSB. We currently have about a 35% completion rate and want to make sure Northern voices are represented in the board data. Please encourage your student to look in their TDSB email for a message about the survey and ask them to complete it. Thank You!

Semester 2 Final Exams: Please find HERE the Semester 2 Final Exam Schedule (updated). You will note the adjustments from the TDSB’s original exam schedule in order to accommodate the necessary shift of commencement to June 27th (at 1pm). More details like room numbers for exams will be shared as we get closer to June.

3 Things to Know About Northern Next Week:

  1. Monday: Grade 8 visits (4 schools only)
  2. Wednesday: Grade 8 Welcome Event in the evening
  3. Friday: Locker Clean-Out Day (exams begin May 12th)

OSSLT Results:

We will be distributing to all students who wrote the OSSLT during April 2023 during lunch (11:45 – 12:35) in the Auditorium on Tuesday June 6, 2023. We request students not to come to the office requesting their results before this scheduled distribution date. In the event students are not able to get their results during this scheduled distribution they will be available after school in the VP office for pick-up.

Northern Lights:

Thank you to everyone who attended our Northern Lights Arts & Tech show last night! Over 250 students and a team of 9 staff brought the show together. It was the first of its kind and a resounding success, with music, dance, drama, technology and visual art displays, performances and interactive workshops throughout our school! Please click the link below to see some pictures of the evening! We can't wait to launch our show again next year!!

The Northern boys team won both South Regions and Cities, earning them the title of South Region Champs and Overall Boys City Champions. We also celebrated a lot of personal bests this season and took home a bunch of medals and top 10 finishes. Congratulations to our top finishers at Metros and our OFSAA qualifiers: Kieva Birmingham (2nd in 3000m & 3rd in 1500m), Lucas Dyck (2nd in 400m & 4th in 200m), Kaine Hamilton-Wright (4th in spring hurdles), Shamiso Sikaneta (1st in both 400m & 800m), Zane Sikaneta (1st in 400m), and Ena Smailbegovic (2nd in 800m).
