"Building Lifelong Learners and Leaders"
Rolph Road Elementary School, which opened in 1939, is located in the
Leaside neighbourhood on Rolph Road. The school currently serves approximately
360 students and offers full day Kindergarten to Grade 6 with an independently
run daycare facility. The curriculum is enriched through partnerships with
specialists for every class from JK to Grade 6 (Scientists in the School,
visiting artists and guest speakers). Students from kindergarten to grade 6 engage in technology regularly,
using in class computers, our computer lab, a class set of wireless laptops and
eight Smart Boards. Our students also participate in a variety of extra
curricular activities, including our participation in a number of inter-school
sporting events. Various leadership opportunities are offered to students in order to contribute to the school environment such as volunteering with
intramurals, assisting with spirit days, helping out with assemblies, students on safety team, and of course helping to deliver the morning announcements.
EMPOWER READING PROGRAM AT ROLPH ROAD - EmpowerTM Reading is a series of evidence-based multi-component intervention programs that were developed by Dr. Maureen W. Lovett and her team at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids). Each reading intervention program has professional development specific to the program. EmpowerTM Reading includes decoding, spelling, comprehension and vocabulary programs that transform children and adolescents with significant reading and spelling difficulties into strategic, independent, and flexible learners. The success of the program is proven through the extensive rigorously designed research conducted by the research team.
MUSIC PROGRAM - Rolph Road has a growing and vibrant music program. Our primary grades
benefit from weekly instruction in vocal music and have opportunities to use
Orff instruments. Our junior students are learning to play the recorder this
year as well as how to read notational music. We have both a primary and junior
choir that practices over the lunch hour on a weekly basis. They perform at our
Remembrance Day assembly and at annual holiday concerts. In past years, we have
also performed the anthems at Toronto Blue Jays games and at the Kiwanis Music
Festival!
ECO-FRIENDLY SCHOOL - At Rolph Road School we practice Eco-friendly habits in the execution of our daily activities even in the morning by reducing our carbon footprint we encourage pupils to walk Incorporated into our class routines and lessons is the focus and importance of protecting and supporting our environment. Staff and students take on the everyday responsibilities of maintaining a clean school and reducing our energy use to a minimum. We separate waste, paper, plastic, tin and compost in an effort to reduce our overall waste output as a school.
