EMPOWER READING PROGRAM AT ROLPH ROAD - EmpowerTM Reading is a series of evidence-based multi-component intervention programs that were developed by Dr. Maureen W. Lovett and her team at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids). Each reading intervention program has professional development specific to the program. EmpowerTM Reading includes decoding, spelling, comprehension and vocabulary programs that transform children and adolescents with significant reading and spelling difficulties into strategic, independent, and flexible learners. The success of the program is proven through the extensive rigorously designed research conducted by the research team.
OUTDOOR PLAY AND LEARNING - An OPAL program has launched. OPAL provides enriched outdoor play opportunities to support creative and diverse outdoor active play experiences. OPAL play allows children to use their imagination and build on their cooperative skills by exploring the world around them.
MUSIC PROGRAM - Rolph Road has a growing and vibrant music program. Our primary grades benefit from weekly instruction in vocal music and have opportunities to use Orff instruments. Our junior students are learning to play the recorder this year as well as how to read notational music. We have both a primary and junior choir that practices over the lunch hour on a weekly basis. They perform at our Remembrance Day assembly and at annual holiday concerts. In past years, we have also performed the anthems at Toronto Blue Jays games and at the Kiwanis Music Festival!
