Important piece from our Volunteer Teacher Coaching Staff
Rolph Road School Teams
We are fortunate at Rolph Road to have many teachers that volunteer their time to provide extra-curricular school sports teams to the students of Rolph Road. The selection process is never easy. During tryouts, there is an emphasis on how to manage expectations and disappointment. If your child does not make a team they are welcome to approach the coaches in a respectful manner for performance feedback. This provides an opportunity for learning and resiliency in student athletes.
There have been many instances where volunteer staff coaches have been aggressively approached by parents questioning their decisions. This has unfortunately led to coaches’ refusal or reluctance to continue to coach teams.
In order to continue to provide numerous opportunities for student athletes, we would appreciate if parents respected the decisions made by coaches. If your child does not make a team, we would like this to be a learning opportunity and instill some self-reflection and resiliency on the part of the student. Again, rather than parents approaching coaches, please encourage your child to speak to the coach about the skills that need improvement.
A candidate will be selected based on the assessment of their overall contribution to a team. Team selection will encompass criteria beyond just athletic ability. A Rolph Road team athlete will need to demonstrate a positive attitude, respect for players and coaches, and a strong commitment to the team. Please note that any example of parental or student-athlete disrespect to a coach, teacher, parent or official will result in the student being removed from the team. It should also be noted that parents who assist with teams are not involved in the selection process.
Philosophy of Rolph Road Teams:
Rolph Road supports the idea of developing an appreciation and passion for competitive team sports that will continue beyond the Rolph Road experience. The team experience is intended to foster self-esteem, sportsmanship, leadership and athletic skill.
