People and Their Environment

People and Their Environment

Possible Framing Questions:

How can humans meet their needs in the Forest Valley environment?
How have communities lived in the Forest Valley environment in the past?

Learning Goal
If students experience the natural environment at Forest Valley and how to meet their basic needs (shelter, fire, water and food) outdoors, then they will gain more understanding of how the environment affects people here in Toronto, and how that compares with other communities around the world.

Variations in Global Communities: B1.1 compare selected communities from around the world, including their own community, in terms of the lifestyles of people in those communities and some ways in which the people meet their needs. B1.2 describe some of the ways in which two or more distinct communities have adapted to their location, climate, and physical features B1.3 demonstrate an understanding of the importance of sustainability in people’s interrelationship with their natural environment and of some of the consequences of sustainable and/or non-sustainable actions

Possible Sequence of the Day

The framing question becomes the focus of the learning throughout the day. The day starts with an engagement activity or two to determine prior understanding, engage the students, and define and get them interested in the framing question. The rest of the morning is spent doing investigation, exploring and conducting hands-on inquiry and problem solving.
