Conservation of Energy

Conservation of Energy

Framing Question

What can nature teach us about conservation of energy and resources?

Learning Goal

If students find evidence of nature using energy efficiently, then they will have a greater understanding of the importance of conserving energy and resources both at home and through our Eco-Schools.

Curriculum Connections

  • Investigate energy transformation and conservation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the various forms and sources of energy and the ways in which energy can be transformed and conserved
  • Conservation (reducing our use of energy and resources) is one way of reducing the impacts of using energy and resources

E2. Measurement

compare, estimate, and determine measurements in various contexts

Possible Sequence of the day

The framing question and learning goals focuses the learning of the day. The day starts with an engagement activity to assess understanding, engage the students, and introduce the framing question. The morning is spent doing investigations, exploring and conducting hands-on inquiry in regard to the forms of energy present in nature and ways in which humans and animals conserve energy and resources. The afternoon application activity is focused on consolidating and then conducting a hands-on student learning experience (e.g., playing conservation of energy game, exploring transformation of energy through fire building or conducting an Earth Stewardship Project (ESP) to conserve energy and resources).
