Remembering The Soldiers

By: Nilakshana V. and Jason P.

On November 10th, 2017 Banting and Best had it’s Remembrance Day Assembly, to recognize and remember the soldiers who fought for our country’s freedom. The entire school and many parents were invited to this assembly, which was held in the gymnasium. Before the event, many of our classes and clubs worked hard to prepare performances to share with everyone on this somber day.

At around 10:15, we started to call classes down to the gym. The area was dressed up with many decorations, with chairs and stands in one side of the gym for the Grade 7 and 8 band students. Classes entered in silence, as this was a serious event. As everyone settled into the gym, the emcees acknowledged the audience, and asked them all to stand for the playing of ‘O Canada’, performed by the intermediate band. All students were doing the sign language to our anthem together. What a sight!

Then we had Grade 8 boys, Glenn, Ronald, and Frankie, recite “In Flanders Fields” written by John McCrae. He wrote the poem after his close friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, died in the Second Battle of Ypres. Next, 3 students, Jason, Kaylee and Alice, trumpet players of the Grade 7/8 band performed “The Last Post”, so everyone could have a moment of silence and think about the war veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country.

Afterwards, the Grade 3 classes sang a song entitled “The Message To The World”, it expressed a valuable message that we should love everyone, and to always have hope, love and peace. Next, our junior and intermediate choir members sang, while Jennifer and Michelle danced to “ My Heart Will Go On” from the emotional and dramatic movie, Titanic. As a group we received great commentary from the audience. While the wreath bearers placed their class wreaths on the cross, Banting and Best’s awesome vocalists continued to sing another song, entitled “The Maple Leaf Forever.” They sang proudly about our beautiful and distinct country. We are proud to be Canadian!

To end the solemn ceremony, the intermediate band performed “Alpha Squadron”, a fast paced song. Those that gathered to honour war veterans who perished fighting for our freedom, were then asked to leave the gymnasium in silence.

Our Islamic Heritage

By: Zara

Here at Banting and Best, we have a diverse community of students. Amongst us are so many cultures and religions. I’m going to give you a whole new idea on Muslim people. I bet you haven’t heard anything about our religion. Well, read on for a few awesome facts about the religion of Islam and Muslim people!

Did you know that the estimated population of Islam is around 1.6 billion Muslims, which is about 1/5 of the world’s population. There have been many amazing Muslim scholars throughout history, including two named Ibn Rushd and Ibn Sina, who were primarily responsible for saving the work of Aristotle, a scholar from Greece. Islam is the second largest religion (the largest is Christianity). The word “algebra” is actually originated from the Arabic word "al-jabr". A bonus fact is that Muslim people believed that the mighty griffin (head of an eagle, body of a lion) was a gift from God to help prophet Muhammed in war.

As you can see, Islam is such an amazing religion. It also has such an interesting history. If you want to learn more, you can search up “facts about Islam”!!!
