Northern Secondary School

July 2nd, 2021

Good Afternoon Northern Families,

We made it! Credits have been earned, rescued, and recovered. Marks entered and students graduated. It has been a challenging year for everyone with a foot in education whether students, staff or parents/ family. At some point before we start again in the fall I hope everyone receiving this takes a moment to reflect on what they have accomplished over the past 10 months. It has been remarkable. Congratulations to you all.

The bulletin continues below- but I want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone- students, staff, and families- for supporting the school, and each other, through this year. We are all looking forward to a more traditional school year in 2021-22.

There will be communication from me again in August. Looking ahead the first day of classes will be Thursday September 9th. Until we have a clearer picture of COVID protocols for the fall I am holding off on sharing dates for our usual timetable pick-up/ photo days.

If you were unable to return devices or books this past week please bring them to the front doors between Monday and Wednesday this week (July 5-7) between 9am and 3pm. Thank You.

Please see Trustee Rachel Chernos Lin’s final newsletter of the school year here: Chernos Lin June Newsletter

I have again attached the June Hearts and Minds Psychology Newsletter and here is the link to the Summer Well Being Guide

Information for Students Leaving TDSB

TDSB accounts for graduating students or students leaving the TDSB will also be made inactive after the summer.

To prepare students for this transition they will need to either move/download the content using Google Takeout or use Google Transfer to move content to their personal Google account. Full instructions can be found here.

From Guidance:

Tentative timetables have been generated but are not being shared via email distribution at this time as guidance continues to work through conflicts. We recognize this is not ideal, but with the recent change to a semestered model we are still working through conflicts. I will email the entire school community once things are confirmed.

August eLearning Summer School: Registration for August courses close: July 8, 2021 at 4:30pm

Lumenus Mental Health Counselling Support during summer:

https://lumenus.ca/programs-and-services/central-toronto-youth-wellness-hub-ontario/

Lumenus Community Services is a partner with Central Toronto Youth Wellness Hub, one of 10 throughout the province, which offers integrated youth, mental health and substance use services for young people aged 12 – 26. These services are free, no health card is required.

Mental health and substance use services are integrated with a range of other youth services. The goal is to provide the right service at the right time. Most youth begin with either a walk in session or drop in to The Studio, our youth driven drop in.

THE FOLLOWING SERVICES ARE PART OF THE YOUTH WELLNESS HUB:

  • Mental health and substance use counselling (walk in, brief, ongoing and 2SLGBTQ+ specific therapist)
  • Primary care (Nurse Practitioner)
  • Peer Support Groups for mental health and substance use
  • Care navigation
  • DBT skills group
  • Parent skills group
  • Psychiatric consultation
  • The Studio, a youth drop-in centre with groups, workshops and special events
  • Employment and Housing support
  • 2SLGBTQ+ programming
  • Programming for Black Youth
  • Support in navigating to other services as needed

During the school year, Lumenus Community Services provides a registered psychotherapist , Dale Callender, on-site, full time at Northern, to work in partnership with the existing school support services. This service can be accessed beginning again in the new school year in September 2021.

If you would like to consult and /or set up a time to talk with Dale, you can contact him via his email at dalecallender@lumenus.ca

Have a restful and rejuvenating summer!

Adam
