notes from the library
our kindergarten students enjoyed a visit with local author sarah kraftchuk on thursday. sarah shared two of her books, how to hug a cloud and love to be me. her message of kindness, compassion and interconnectedness was well received. students took part in a guided meditation and had the opportunity to ask questions about ideas and writing, and how you become an author. we are thankful to lauryn z. for helping us make the connection with such a wonderful writer and grateful for sarah's visit. she generously donated copies of her three books to our library. those wishing to purchase their own copy of her books are welcome to check out her website (linked above).
we look forward to hosting evanka osmak on may 15th for our students in grades 2-4, while she shares her first novel ali hoops with our students.
equity committee
asian heritage month has been proudly recognized at the toronto district school board during the month of may since 2007. the tdsb is the largest and one of the most diverse school boards in canada. nearly one-quarter of our students were born outside of canada and collectively we speak more than 120 languages. according to the 2023 student census 46% of tdsb students self-identified as asian. the equity committee is excited to host a presentation by the wushu project on friday, may 23rd. the wushu project is home to one of canada's national lion & dragon dance teams. they will perform for our students and answer questions during their presentation.
jewish heritage month is also recognized at the toronto district school board (tdsb) during the month of may. the canadian jewish heritage act, was passed in may 2018 and is also recognized by the province of ontario by the passing of the jewish heritage month act, 2012. as stated in the jewish heritage month act, 2012, “may is a significant month for the jewish canadian community. israeli independence day (yom ha-atzmaut) and holocaust remembrance day (yom ha-shoah) frequently occur in may, as do various jewish artistic and cultural events.”
eco team update
thank you to everyone who helped support our earth week activities and clothing themes for the week. the earth thanks you! classes were busy doing earth day activities as a school as well as in their classrooms. the whole school participated in a clean up and in a planting activity for our rooftop patio. every class planted corn, beans and squash representing the three sisters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXPfH5k08R0
The eco team will be continuing with many initiatives during the month of may, so stay tuned. we are collecting pet food packaging again along with our regular items; dead batteries, dead markers and snack wrappers. keep them coming!
picking up/dropping off children
if you are planning to take your child out of school for an appointment, please be kind enough to communicate your intent with both the classroom teacher as well as with the office via e-mail on the day before the event if at all possible. we realize that this is not always possible but try to give us as much advance notice as possible as staff will not be able to check their messages while teaching.
when picking up your child, we ask parents to wait to be buzzed into the office. we will call the classroom teacher to notify your child that you are here to pick them up. please do not go directly to the child's classroom as this is disruptive to our staff and to the lessons being carried out. if your child is coming in late, please do not take your child to the classroom (with the exception of kindergarten students) as they can go on their own.
we greatly appreciate your assistance in these matters.
lunch supervisors urgently needed
we are once again looking to fill four lunchroom supervisor positions. if you enjoy working with children and are flexible enough to be at school from 11:15 -12:30 each day, please reach out directly to school administration.
