Hairstyling and Aesthetics Department

The Hairstyling program at Central Tech combines creativity with professional skill development to prepare students for success in the industry. Through hands-on salon experience, students learn essential hairstyling, makeup, and nail care techniques and theory. Guided by an experienced instructor, students build confidence and professionalism while exploring pathways to rewarding careers in hairstyling and aesthetics.

Our Course Offerings

Grade 10

Hairstyling and Aesthetics (TXJ2O)

In this introductory course, you will learn the fundamentals of hairstyling and nail care from a salon and spa perspective. Through practical activities, you will gain hands-on experience with professional equipment and become familiar with techniques and terminology used in the industry. Your skills will develop in hairstyling, performing manicures, and caring for the hair and scalp, as well as create an awareness of the environmental and societal impacts of beauty practices and explore career opportunities in the industry.

Grade 11

Hairstyling and Aesthetics (TXJ3E)

In this course, you will build your knowledge and technical skills to provide services to a variety of clients. Along with fundamental styling techniques, you will learn hair colour theory and practical application.  By exploring industry trends, learning about health and safety standards, and refining your communication skills through interactions with peers and clients, you will be well on your way to success. Plus, you will explore the impact of beauty practices on society and the environment, and career opportunities in the industry.

Grade 12

Hairstyling and Aesthetics (TXJ4E)

This course allows you to refine your skills and build hands-on experience by providing a variety of hairstyling services within a real salon team environment. Building on your haircoloring skills, you will learn hair cutting theory and application on mannequins and peers. As well as how salons operate — from business practices and client care to teamwork and professionalism. By the end of this course, you will have the hands-on experience and skills needed for post-secondary options, such as apprenticeships, college programs, and direct entry into the workforce.

Grade 11/12 - 2 Credits

Hairstyling & Aesthetics: Hairstyling Focus (TXH3EX, TXH4EX)

In this 2-credit course, you will refine your hairstyling skills, focusing on styling, technical hair cutting, and hair colouring techniques. Working in a salon environment, you will gain real-world experience by providing services to peers and clients and develop technical, creative, and communication skills while learning about salon operations, business practices, and client management. The course will prepare you for your next steps, be it heading to a college program, an apprenticeship, or any career in hairstyling.


Hospitality & Tourism and Culinary Department

The Hospitality program at Central Tech equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry. Through hands-on experience in real-world settings—such as restaurants and event management—students learn essential techniques and theory. Guided by experienced instructors, students build confidence while exploring pathways to rewarding careers in the culinary arts and hospitality fields.

Our Course Offerings

Grade 10

Hospitality and Tourism: Cooking (TFJ2O1)

This introductory course provides you with opportunities to explore different areas of hospitality and tourism, with an emphasis on food service. You will learn culinary techniques, including safe food handling and preparation, health and safety standards, and how to correctly use tools and equipment. You will explore the origins of foods, event planning, and learn about tourism attractions across Ontario, as well as develop an awareness of environmental and social issues in the industry. 

Grade 11/12 College 

Hospitality and Tourism: Cooking (TFJ3C1, TFJ4C1)

This course is perfect if you want to dive into the world of hospitality and tourism. You will learn how to prepare and present a variety of delicious dishes, from pasta and rice to vegetables, meats, and poultry. You will also get to improve your knife skills and cooking techniques along the way. Beyond cooking, this course covers important topics like managing inventory, marketing, running events, customer service and the cultural and economic forces that shape tourism trends. Plus, you will explore health and safety standards, environmental issues, and career opportunities in the tourism industry.

Grade 11/12 Workplace

Hospitality and Tourism: Senior Introductory (TFC4E1)

This class will introduce you to the life skills needed to be safe and efficient in a kitchen environment, whether for future career opportunities or not.  In this class, you will be working in cooking labs, developing knife skills, recipe understanding, and cooking methods while maintaining professional safety standards. You will have input on a selection of soup, pasta, pizza, salads and pastries that you will be making throughout this class. 

Grade 11/12 Baking

Hospitality and Tourism: Baking (TFB3E1, TFB4E1)

In this course, you will learn the skills and techniques needed to bake and decorate delicious pastries. You will work on a variety of desserts, breads, rolls, pies, cakes, and fillings with safety and sanitation practices in place.  You will gain a good understanding of the baking industry, including important terms and real-world practices, while focusing on skills that are useful in today’s workplaces.  By the end of the course, you'll have the hands-on experience needed to succeed in the world of baking!  

Grade 11/12 - 2 credits 

Hospitality and Tourism: Cooking and Baking (TFR3CX, TFR4CX)

This course is a fantastic way to kickstart a career in the Culinary Arts or to improve your cooking and/or baking skills if you just love being in the kitchen. Since it’s a double class, we’ll have plenty of time to practice different cooking techniques and methods. You’ll also gain real-world experience by providing restaurant-style service at catering events and going on field trips to learn more about the industry. In class, you’ll make a range of student-led recipes, like deboning chicken and fish, creating stocks and sauces, improving your knife skills by cutting vegetables, and even making sourdough and other ferments. You’ll have lots of creative freedom to experiment with your cooking ideas.
