TDSB e-Learning courses have been developed by the Ministry of Education and are delivered online by TDSB teachers. e-Learning courses are primarily asynchronous and students access course material through electronic and digital resources such as learning modules, internet sites, videos and discussion groups. The courses cover the same expectations as regular day school courses. In e-Learning courses, students are expected to log in and commit 75-90 minutes daily to engage in and complete work independently. While it may vary throughout the duration of the course, that is the equivalent of 75-minutes of class time, along with homework time. About 1 hour (60 minutes) per week will be synchronous and a live lesson will be delivered by the teacher. The synchronous lessons are recorded and posted. Students may choose to attend the lesson when it is delivered or access the recording at another time. The remaining hours will be asynchronous, and students receive support from the teacher through posted material, tutorials, office hours and individual conferences. e-Learning courses count toward the Online Graduation requirement. Virtual, or 'remote' courses are asynchronous, where attendance is mandatory and students are expected to be present online with the teacher and classmates for the full duration of the class. Virtual, or 'remote' courses do not meet the Online Graduation requirement
Secondary students across the TDSB may take one e-Learning course per semester as a part of their day school timetable. Students must also be taking courses in their day school while they are enrolled in their e-learning course. Students will remain on the roll at their day school and require their Guidance Counsellor's approval to take an e-Learning Day School course.
All enrolled students are invited to attend an after-school, online orientation session to meet their e-Learning teacher at the beginning of each semester (September and February). The orientation session is recorded and is available for late-registering students to view.
Please note that although e-Learning courses are asynchronous, they are not self-paced courses. Assignments and evaluations are to be completed and submitted according to the due dates established in the course outline. Students are expected to log in and commit 75-90 minutes daily to engage in and complete work independently. While it may vary throughout the duration of the course, that is the equivalent of 75-minutes of class time, along with homework time.
