What if I can’t attend the orientation session?
In order to complete enrolment in a TDSB e-Summer School course you MUST complete an orientation.
If you are unable to attend the orientation on the specified date, you must notify your teacher of your absence. Wait until the first day of class and email your TEACHER using the built-in-email system inside of your online class. Arrange with your teacher an alternate orientation time.
What is Virtual Classroom (classroom video session)?
Virtual Classroom is a web conferencing tool designed to hold online meetings, conferences and deliver academic lessons and tutorials using a computer or a laptop. Through Virtual Classroom you can see, hear and interact with your teacher and classmates. It's like Skype but with a whiteboard. You will use Virtual Classroom to conference with your teacher and participate in tutorials and lessons. If you can't attend a particular Virtual Classroom session live, you can watch a recording of the session that your teacher will post in your D2L (online) classroom.
How often are the Virtual Classroom (classroom video sessions) Sessions held?
Students must attend all Virtual Classroom sessions scheduled by their teachers. The e-Summer School students are required to participate in tutorials and lessons conducted by the teacher on a daily basis. For those unable to attend a live session are required to view the recorded session posted on the course homepage at an earliest possible date.

When will my daily Virtual Classroom (classroom video session) be running for my course?
It will vary. Virtual Classroom sessions will be scheduled differently for each course. Please consult with your teacher for the schedule.
Do I have to log in to my online course at a specific time of day?
No. You don't have to work on your e-Summer School course at a particular time of day.
Teachers do not set a specific time for login. You just need to login every school day (Monday-Friday) and complete a certain amount of work by the date set out by your teacher. Expect to spend 5-7 hours per day on a full credit course. Missing one day of e-Summer School is like missing an entire week of class during the regular school year.
How many e-Summer School courses can I take?
You can take ONE full credit course per session during e-Summer School.
That means a maximum of one full credit course in Session 1(July) and one full credit course in Session 2 (July/August).
With the exception of Civics and Careers, all other courses are counted as ONE full credit.
Can I take one e-Summer School course in the July Session and one in the July/August Session?
Our calendar for the 2020 Summer Program has not been finalized or approved at this time. This information pertains to the 2019 Summer Program and may differ once our calendar has been finalized for 2020.
Yes, but please be aware that the courses will overlap for six days. Six days of e-Summer School is the equivalent of six weeks of day school. It will be very busy during the overlap, especially preparing for the July Session exam. Please discuss this option with your parent/guardian as well as your Day School Guidance Counsellor before committing to an e-Summer course in each session.
Can I take a face-to-face (F2F) course and an e-Summer School course at the same time?
No. Just in case this wasn't clear enough we'll say it again: you can't take face-to-face summer school and an e-Learning course at the same time.
Taking a full credit course online is like going to school FULL TIME! You're taking a full high school credit in only 4 weeks. That's 110 hours of instruction in only 20 days. That's 5.5 hours of school per day plus major assignments and studying for tests and exams. We do not recommend any student take more than one credit as the time commitment will be overwhelming!
Can I take Civics and Careers at the same time?
Yes! Civics and Careers are half credit courses; two of them together equal one full credit course. They run for the full length of each session and you can take them both at the same time.
Are my Civics and Careers course the same course in D2L (similar to my regular day school)?
No. Civics and Careers will be 2 separate courses in your D2L learning environment.
I've submitted my course request online, is there anything else I have to do?
Yes! You haven't finished the registration process yet!
Your guidance counsellor has to approve your course request in order to complete your registration. If you're under 18, download and print out the parent/guardian permission form attached to your e-Summer School confirmation email. Get this form signed and take it to your guidance counsellor. So hustle in and see your guidance counsellor as soon as you can and have your e-Summer School course request approved. Don't wait! Many of our courses fill up really quickly.
How do I drop an e-Summer School course?
Use the e-Summer School Course Withdrawal Form to drop a course.
While we hope as many students as possible will be successful in e-Summer School, you have to do what you have to do. Keep in mind that if you drop a grade 11 or 12 course after the Full Disclosure date the mark will appear on your permanent transcript. If you intend to drop, do so before the Full Disclosure date! Please note that emailing your teacher about your intention to drop is not the same as completing the form, and if you do not complete the form you will not be removed from the course!
I'm traveling for a few weeks this summer; can I still take an e-Summer School Course?
Yes, if they have internet where you're going and you can commit to working on your course for 5-7 hours per day. As long as students make a full commitment to fulfilling the course requirements and meeting teacher’s expectations in terms of completing and submitting assignments on time, participating in assigned activities and attending face to face exam at a central location, students could use their own discretion to travel.
Don't go to the cottage and complain to your teacher that you missed half the course because you couldn't get a wifi signal on the dock. You may be surrounded by the distractions of nature, but you still have to put in a full day of work on your e-Summer School course every day. Same goes for foreign travel. If you're visiting your relatives in Belgrade make sure their apartment has internet access before you go. You’ve signed up for an online course; it’s your responsibility to ensure you have internet access throughout the duration of your e-Summer School session.
I won't be able to attend the final face-to-face (F2F) exam. What are my options?
You will have to arrange for a proctor for your final exam.
That's someone (not a family member) who is a member of an educational organization (professor, instructor, principal, librarian or teacher ) or on our list of approved proctors, who will supervise your exam outside of the GTA. There is a strict process for proctored exams and all forms have to be completed and submitted to the e-Learning Central Office by the end of the first week of classes.
How do I log in to my online course?
Everyone logs into Desire2Learn (D2L) at https://tdsb.elearningontario.ca/d2l/local
Students will receive a username and a password reset link by email. You'll create your own password for D2L. When you've logged into D2L you'll land on your “My Home” page and you'll see a link to the specific course you're registered for this summer.
I forgot my password. What should I do?
You can request a password reset by going to this site: https://tdsb.elearningontario.ca/d2l/local and clicking on the “Forgot Password” link. Once you have reset your password, continue to use the external login site to access your course.
How much does it cost to take an e-Summer School course?
Unlike most things in life, it's free. But your teacher's time and your time are valuable, so treat your course with the respect that a valuable opportunity like this deserves.
Does it matter if I use a Mac or a PC?
No. Desire2Learn (the platform for all TDSB e-learning courses) works fine on both Macs and PCs.What's more important is to always use the most recent version of your browser. The most up-to-date versions of Chrome, FIrefox, Safari and Internet Explorer all work with Desire2Learn.
What textbooks will I need for the online course?
None. No textbooks are required for your course. All content will be provided to you online through the D2L learning environment.
Does it matter which browser I use?
Yes. DO NOT USE Internet Explorer 8. It isn’t fully compatible.
Who do I call for the tech support when I run into technical issues with the D2L?
For technical help call D2L Tech Support 24/7 at 1-800-222-0209

Please note that this form should only be completed for non-TDSB students who are attending a Post-Secondary Institution in September of the current year.
