Taking the Outdoor Experience Farther

Hillside offers students a fantastic day of learning and inquiring outdoors- but the wonder doesn't stop there! There are ways to share the joy of nature beyond your trip.

Rouge Park Public Walking Trails
There are many public walking trails in the Rouge Valley.  Take some time to come and explore.

Located in the Rouge Valley

Hillside’s outdoor classroom is located near the zoo and adjacent to the Rouge Park, Canada’s largest urban park, over 47 km2 of natural landscapes waiting to dazzle you with its spectacular forests, meadows, ponds and wetlands.

Students visiting Hillside are introduced a wide array of programs with a focus on an aspect of The Ontario Curriculum. Direct, hands-on outdoor experiences deepen connections to nature and enhance children’s health and well-being.

Our programs provide education about the environment, in the environment and for the environment as outlined in the Ministry of Education’s policy framework on environmental education, Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow. They are designed in collaboration with visiting teachers so that it enhances and strengthens the programs that teachers are delivering in their own classrooms. We would like to help support your programming.  Please contact us for ideas on activities, websites, books etc. that may be useful.

"Photo a Day" of the Rouge

Check out the "Photo a Day" video of the Rouge Valley in the 2015-16 school year. Thanks to Hillside Staff and interns Emma and Shannon for all of the work in creating this great montage.
We took a photo near our school every day from Sept. 2015 - June 2016.  This is what we came up with.  Remarkable!
