English, ESL and Moderns

Jarvis Collegiate Institute English and ESL

In the English and ESL program at Jarvis, students engage with a wide variety of texts, both fiction and nonfiction, by a diverse range of authors whose works reflect the cultural diversity that makes our school community so vibrant. Students learn critical thinking and reading skills, how to express themselves effectively both orally and in writing, and how to be savvy creators and consumers of media texts.

Grade 9 and 10 English classes help students build a strong foundation of literacy skills in preparation not only for senior-level classes but also for success on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which they write in their Grade 10 year. We also provide after-school classes for students who require extra literacy support.

Grade 11 and 12 English courses include those at the College, University, Pre-AP, and AP level.

English language learners in the ESL program receive intensive instruction and support in their journey to become proficient readers, writers, and speakers of English. They also enjoy experiential learning opportunities such as the Hockey 4 Youth program (see https://hockey4youth.org/ for more information).

Jarvis Collegiate Institute Moderns

Students at Jarvis can study French at every grade level. In these courses, students enhance their understanding of both written and spoken French in order to become more proficient speakers, readers, and writers of Canada’s second official language.

EQAO - Grade 10 Literacy Test

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The purpose of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is to determine whether students have acquired the literacy (reading and writing) skills that they are expected to have learned by the end of Grade 9, as outlined in the Ontario curriculum.  Each year students are required to write the OSSLT.  All students must pass this test with a minimum mark of 70% in order to graduate from high school.  Students write this test for the first time in Grade 10.
