Dear MGCI Parents/Guardians/Caregivers/Students:

Today was a very busy day with information changing throughout the day. I understand that the moving of exams is a stressful time for all the students who had exams scheduled today and we appreciate your flexibility.

As a reminder:

Friday morning exams - now written on Tuesday morning

Friday afternoon exams - now written on Monday morning.

This reschedule resulted in the fewest number of exam writing conflicts for the students. Should your child still have a conflict as a result, please have them message Ms. Kwon as soon as possible (peggy.kwon@tdsb.on.ca).

We wish the families impacted by the events on the bridge our thoughts and well wishes.

Gillian Evans, Principal

We are very interested in helping students this summer upgrade and practice their skills specifically at Math and English.

We have organized two separate sessions running from July 8 to 26 and July 29 to August 14. Students will be taught in two cohorts: Grade 6-8 in the mornings from 10:00 to 12:30 p.m. and Grades 9 & 10 in the afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Students are also most welcome to attend both 3-week sessions. They will certain to receive very close attention from the students we have hired who are proficient in Farsi, Pashto, Urdu or Arabic.

We are hosting these sessions for both middle and high school students this summer in classrooms at VPMS. Our flyer as mentioned is attached. We still really need participants and would welcome references from you of students who may require extra help. Please encourage them to apply through our website here:

  1. Worth Repeating - Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute has produced its first-ever cookbook.

This project is a collective effort that involves students, staff, caregivers, and community members.

The cookbook contains a collection of over 40 recipes and stories that represent our diverse school community.

Students have worked with participating staff and community/industry leaders to test recipes and produce all of the content, layout, and photography for the cookbook.

This cookbook is a celebration of our shared values, our shared pride, and our shared commitment to amplifying the voices of our school community. It serves as a reminder of the power of collaboration and story-tellling.

  1. Worth Repeating - Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute - Policy for Absences from Culminating Activities and Exams

Moratorium is a period of four days prior to the scheduled final exam days.  During this time, students will be working on final culminating projects or reviewing for their exams with their teachers.

Final exams run from Wednesday, June 19th - Tuesday, June 25th, 2024.  The exam schedule will be shared with students and the community in the coming weeks.

Please be reminded of our policy for absences during Culminating Assignments and Final Exams:

Absence from a Culminating Activity Evaluation: Culminating activities are completed toward the end of a course and are part of the student’s 30% final evaluation. Culminating activities and examinations carry the same importance and the same attendance requirement. Thus, attendance during culminating activities is mandatory. Some courses have culminating activities that take place over several days.

If a student misses a culminating activity, the student will receive a mark of “0”. In the event that a student is too ill to complete a culminating activity, the parent/guardian must provide medical documentation of the illness. The parent/guardian is asked to contact the school before the culminating activity due date. The parent/guardian will be given a  ‘Missed Evaluation’ Form to be completed by a medical doctor and submitted within two days of the missed culminating activity.  Family vacations are not considered excused absences and as such, students are expected to be in class for all culminating activities.

If satisfactory documentation of the illness is provided on the Missed Evaluation Form, the culminating activity may be rescheduled. Otherwise, the student will receive a mark of “0”.  There are no exemptions.

Absence from a Final Examination: Exam dates and times for all courses are set out in the exam schedule which will be distributed to students and parents/guardians. We are not able to accommodate any changes to the Exam Schedule or requests to write an exam at a date/time other than the scheduled date/time shown.

Students are urged to check their exam schedule carefully. If a student misses an exam because of misreading the schedule, the student will receive a mark of “0”.

In the event that a student is too ill to write a final exam, the parent/guardian must provide documentation of the illness. The parent/guardian is asked to contact the school before the Exam is written. The parent/guardian will be given a ‘Missed Evaluation’ form to be completed by a medical doctor and submitted within two days of the missed exam.

Family vacations are not considered excused absences and as such, students are expected to be in attendance for all examinations.

If satisfactory documentation of the illness is provided on the missed evaluation form, an alternative evaluation may be scheduled. Students granted an alternative evaluation will receive a mark of “0” until they complete the alternative examination.  There are no exemptions from writing an exam.

Late Arrivals During an Exam: Each student is given a copy of the Exam Schedule at least two weeks before the examination. Punctuality is expected. Students who arrive late will be admitted to the exam up to one hour after the exam begins, but will not receive extra time.

Plagiarism/Cheating: Any student found copying from someone and/or in possession of notes or materials not permitted in the Exam Room will be deemed cheating. Electronic devices are not permitted in the exam room unless permission has been granted from the Vice-Principal (ie. electronic translation devices).

Students using electronic devices during Exams to download or share information will be deemed to be cheating. Cheating is a serious offence and may lead to a mark of “0”.
