The importance of developing strong communication skills in English is vital to achieving success in the world of work and post-secondary study in Canada. SCAS offers a range of English courses which will help you to reach your goals. To graduate from SCAS, you must successfully complete the Ontario Literacy requirement, which is satisfied by the OLC course, as well as Grade 11 & 12 English. Please review our program offerings to see which courses will best suit your needs.

Please note that placement in a course is based on your SCAS language assessment.

 


 

GRADE 11 COLLEGE PREPARATION ENGLISH (ENG3C)

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

This credit prepares students to take ENG4C, and meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma’s grade 11 English requirement.

This course introduces students to college preparation by stressing active, engaged reading and clear, and accurate writing. Students in this course can expect to develop their skills particularly in essay writing, and in the analysis and interpretation of fiction and media works.

Students who are successful in this course may enter the grade 12 college course (ENG4C), elect to further strengthen their skills in the grade 12 workplace English course (ENG4E), or pursue the university program (ENG3U to ENG4U).

 

GRADE 11 UNIVERSITY ENGLISH (ENG3U)

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

This credit prepares students to take ENG4U, and meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma’s grade 11 English requirement.

This course introduces students to university preparation by stressing an approach to reading that prioritizes the critical and creative analysis of challenging works, and an approach to writing that prioritizes accuracy, precision, and style. Students in this course can expect to read a variety of short fiction works, Shakespeare, and academic journals, and view contemporary documentaries on issues of relevance.

Students who are successful in this course may take any of the grade 12 courses – for workplace (ENG4E), college (ENG4C), or university (ENG4U).

 

GRADE 12 COLLEGE PREPARATION ENGLISH (ENG4C)

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

This credit can be used to apply to college programs, and meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma’s grade 12 English requirement.

This course prepares students for college by stressing the importance of critical and creative response to informational, fiction, and graphic texts, and the importance of clear and accurate informational writing. Students in this course can expect to read articles, short fiction, academic journals, and view contemporary media works on important social issues.

 

GRADE 12 UNIVERSITY ENGLISH (ENG4U)

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

This credit can be used to apply to university and college programs, and meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma’s grade 12 English requirement.

This course prepares students for university-level studies by emphasizing literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills. Students in this course analyze literary works from different cultures and time periods, and use informational and graphic texts to promote deeper and stronger thinking. Writing in this course focuses on using academic language with control, coherence, and confidence.

This course prepares students for university by stressing the importance of using literary theories to critique and analyze works from classical and contemporary works, and the importance of developing a unique and confident voice in their academic writing. Students in this course can expect to read two major works of fiction, as well as a variety of academic and theory works to support their critical interpretations.

 


 

ONTARIO LITERACY REQUIREMENT CREDIT (OLC4O)

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

This credit meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma’s literacy requirement.

Before you can receive your Ontario Secondary School Diploma, you must complete the literacy requirements set by the Ontario Ministry of Education.   This course meets the literacy requirement.  You may take the course at the same time as or after grade 12 English. The course requires you to demonstrate moderate skill on all course evaluations.
