If you are interested in brushing up on some of your math skills or plan on applying to a college or university program that has math as a prerequisite, or if you just enjoy math and problem solving, choose a math course at SCAS. In our math courses you will learn math skills and problem-solving techniques which you can use in your job as well as your everyday life.
The Mathematics courses are based on the Ontario Ministry of Education Mathematics curriculum, Grades 9 to 12.
For all Mathematics courses, a scientific calculator is required. The courses include the effective use of technology.
GRADE 10 APPLIED MATHEMATICS (MFM2P)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
In MFM2P students further develop key mathematical skills as well as study new topics such as trigonometry and quadratics. Students use their skills to investigate applications and solve problems. A scientific calculator is required.
Recommended Prerequisites: MFM1P or Math Assessment and ESLDO
GRADE 10 PRINCIPLES OF MATHEMATICS, ACADEMIC (MPM2D)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
This course enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. This course will be offered in September – November only.
GRADE 11 FOUNDATIONS FOR COLLEGE MATHEMATICS (MBF3C)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
In MBF3C students extend their understanding of mathematics as a problem-solving tool in the real world as they study topics such as trigonometry, quadratics, exponential growth, compound interest and statistics.
Prerequisites: MFM2P
GRADE 11 FUNCTIONS - UNIVERSITY PREPARATION (MCR3U)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
The course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students’ experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course will be offered in November – January only.
Prerequisites: MPM2D
GRADE 12 FOUNDATIONS FOR COLLEGE MATHEMATICS (MAP4C)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
In MAP4C students broaden their understanding of real-world applications of mathematics as they study topics such as trigonometry, graphical analysis, finance, geometry and statistics. MAP4C is a prerequisite for college programs in health sciences, business and human services. Some skilled trades also require MAP4C.
Prerequisites: MBF3C
ADVANCED FUNCTIONS (MHF4U)
1 Credit/ 2 Hrs Daily
This course extends students experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rations, logarithmic and trigometric functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students who plan to study mathematics in university and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs.
Prerequisite: Functions and Applications MCF3M or Functions MCR3U
CALCULUS AND VECTORS, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION (MCV4U)
1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily
This course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relationships. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business, including those students who will be required to take a university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course.
Prerequisite/Corequisite: Advanced Functions MHF4U
