Swimming

The dock at SOES

After Victoria Day, depending on water temperature and the weather, the bugs appear in our forest and so we head for the water. All students are encouraged to get PERMISSION FORMS signed so that they can swim and/or canoe in Peter's Lake. National Lifeguard (NL) qualified lifeguards watch over all of our swimming and canoeing programs and students ALWAYS wear personal flotation devices (PFDs).

During the initial swimming introduction students receive one-on-one attention with our lifeguards. This is known as our Swim Comfortability Test. All students will receive direct coaching during the Swim Comfortability Test. New swimmers are paired with NL Qualified Swim Instructors who will be in the water with the students. If a student has never had an opportunity to swim before, this is a great opportunity for a safe, qualified, and well supervised introductory experience.

Students enter the water off the dock and make a short swim, using any stroke, to the shore. This is followed by an organized tipping over of a canoe (within the swimming area) to demonstrate the procedure should this unlikely event occur. If the weather is warm, on longer visits there is often the opportunity for a free swim inside our lifeguard supervised swim areas. With permission, non-swimmers may be able to participate in a learn to swim program.
