George Harvey values the success of every individual student. Student success, to us, is the success of our students in achieving their full potentials and developing the 21st Century global competencies they need to excel in their post-secondary destinations.
Our Student Success & SHSM Department, in conjunction with our Administration Team, Student Services Staff, Special Education Department and SHSM Leads, not only supports the academic success of our students, but also prepare them for their post-secondary careers. We offer a progressive Student Success program with a team of caring adults, and build student capacity through sector-partnered STEM activities and experiential learning opportunities.
Progressive Student Success Approach:
1. Credit Support
- One-on-One Extra Help
- After-School Literacy and Numeracy Programs
- Grade 9 EQAO and Grade 10 OSSLT Lunch-n-Learn
- Peer Tutoring (Licensed to Learn Partnership)
2. Credit Rescue
Credit rescue is an early intervention initiative to support student achievement by attempting to rescue the credit while the student is enrolled in the course before the student receives a failing grade. We offer both ongoing credit rescue opportunities by subject teachers (within regular classrooms) and intensive credit rescue sessions by the student success teacher (with short-term withdrawal from class).
3. Credit Recovery
Credit recovery is a student success initiative which enables students to earn a credit after an unsuccessful attempt without repeating the entire course. Credit Recovery focuses not on time, but on what overall expectations the student must attain before earning the credit. Students may only recover the credit of the actual course failed; they may not use credit recovery to earn credit for a course of a different type, grade, or level in the same subject or for a course that they have neither taken nor failed.
4. Credit Accumulation
Alternate Learning Opportunities to support credit accumulation are available to senior students.
Dual Credits
Dual credit programs are programs approved by the Ministry of Education that allow students, while they are still in secondary school, to take college or apprenticeship course that counts towards both their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree, or a Certificate of Apprenticeship. Dual credit programs are intended to assist secondary school students in completing their OSSD and making a successful transition to college and/or apprenticeship programs. We offers Dual Credits in partnership with four GTA colleges (Centennial, George Brown, Humber and Seneca College).
SWAC
School Within A College (SWAC) Program offers students between the ages of 17-20 the opportunity to earn secondary school credits and two college-delivered Dual Credits on a college campus, which also count towards their OSSD and college transcript. We offers SWAC in partnership with four GTA colleges (Centennial, George Brown, Humber and Seneca College).
Selection Criteria:
- Must be between the ages of 17-20, in grades 12/12+
- Should have completed at least 22-25 credits
- Completed OSSLT or attempted OSSLC
- Must be in a position to recover credits in a SWAC Credit Recovery classroom to support a future application to post-secondary
- In a graduating position by June
- Demonstrates evidence of independent learning skills
- Preparing for transition to post-secondary
All interested students are encouraged to make an appointment with their guidance counsellor to discuss the above criteria and this exciting opportunity!
