AVI1O1 Visual Arts, Grade 9

This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures

AVI2O1 Visual Arts, Grade 10

This course emphasizes learning though practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either though a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., drawing, painting).

AVI3O1 Visual Arts, Grade 11

This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as Canadian art forms and art forms from various parts of the world.

Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 9 or 10, Open.

AVI4M1 Visual Arts, Grade 12 (University/College preparation)

The goals of this course are refined self-expression and communication, with an emphasis on the relationships among personal subject matter, media, and techniques. While drawing and painting are emphasized, expression in other art forms is also encouraged and reinforced through analysis and interpretation of art, past and present.

Recommended Preparation: AVI2A or AVI3A.

AWK/2O/3M/4M1 Visual Arts, Illustration, Grades 10 & 11 Open and Grades 11 & 12 University/College preperation

This course will emphasize principles and processes of illustration. Student will develop skills in observational drawing using a variety media and techniques. Critical thinking skills and concept development will be explored while developing creative expression.

AWQ3O/3M/4M1 Visual Arts, Photography, Grade 11 Open and Grades 11 & 12 University/College preperation

Students will learn about traditional photography as an expressive art form. The history of art as it relates to photography will be included and the role of digital imaging and manipulation may be included in the studio projects.
Prerequisite: For prerequisite information see AVI3M/3O or AVI4M

AWS2O/3M/4M1 Visual Arts, Digital Media, Grade 10 Open and Grades 11 & 12 University/College preparation

Students will learn how to use the computer as an expressive tool for designing a creative solution to a design problem. Developing expertise as an effective visual communicator will be the focus of this course. The study of current trends and developments in new media will support all studio projects.
