Moderns

The Modern's Department brings a cultural flare to Runnymede. By introducing Spanish and French courses, we add to our school's diversity. Students learn not only how to communicate in the language studied, they also gain an understanding of social customs and the arts. Each course offers awards and the Modern's Department also organizes a special trip to Spain and France for interested students.

Courses Offered

LWSAD Spanish: International Languages, Level 1, Academic

This course is designed to enable students to begin to communicate with native speakers of the language of study. Students will use simple language and read age- and language-appropriate passages for different purposes. They will explore aspects of the culture of countries where Spanish is spoken, including social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both print and technological resources.

LWSBD Spanish: International Languages, Level 2, Academic

This course provides students with the language learning experiences that will enable them to communicate in the language of study. Students will continue to develop and apply their speaking skills in a variety of contexts, and will participate in activities that will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. They will also continue to explore aspects of the culture of countries where Spanish is spoken by taking part in community-sponsored events and activities involving both print and technological resources. Although students will continue to expand their vocabulary and repertoire of language structures, the language they will use at this level will still be simple. Note: Where a school does not offer an international language Level 1 course, it is understood that the expectations for both Level 1 and 2 will be met by the completion of Level 2.

Awards

For every grade level and year, there is an award for the highest mark in both Spanish and French. In OAC, there is a special monetary Award for Spanish and French.

Special Events

In March 2001, the Moderns department organized a special trip for interested students to visit Spain and France. Students got the opportunity to tour major areas of the two countries. They gained real life experiences while interacting with people of the cultures learning about society, the arts and how to communicate on a higher level.
