Principal's Message

November 2, 2018

The past couple of weeks have been busy with a variety of events and activities.

Last week, we hosted a delegation from South Korea who joined us to learn about secondary schools in Ontario.  Our visiting guests enjoyed their afternoon visit which included a lot of discussion and some classroom visits.  I am proud of how our teachers and students represented York Mills so well!

We had a good turnout for our first Parent-Teacher Interview session.  I would like to thank the student ambassadors and the many volunteer student secretaries who assisted with making the interview sessions run smoothly.  We thank all our teachers and parents/guardians for engaging in ongoing dialogue regarding academic progress.

York Mills hosted a US Expo.  It was a well-attended and informative evening about post-secondary schools in the United States.  Thank you to Ms. Zappone for organizing this event!

This week, I enjoyed attending some Halloween activities:  Best Buddies hosted pumpkin carving with Mr. Sompaseuth’s class,  Ms. Badger and Mr. Doe’s Grade 10 English classes hosted a Magicon event, and the Student Council with Ms. Gluskin and Ms. Pandurevic hosted a Costume Contest in the cafeteria.  Thank you to all students and staff who showed York Mills’ Halloween spirit by dressing up.  It was nice to see this fun tradition continue.

Cheat Notes Show Choir:

It's time to clean out your closets! YMCI's very own Cheat Notes Show Choir is collecting clothing and household items as part of our fundraising for this year's season! Please check and see if there is anything you would like to donate and, if so, please drop off your items in large garbage bags to the Drama Room byMonday, November 12!   What are we looking for? Clothing for any shape/size and age, shoes/boots, small appliances, housewares.  Feel free to bring your items to the YMSAC meeting on Tuesday, November 6.

Cheat Notes is also hosting a winter fundraiser by selling holiday plants from Vandermeer Nurseries.  All of the holiday plants, including the cyclamen and poinsettias, are grown in their greenhouses in Ajax, Ontario.  Funds raised will go directly to towards music, costumes, etc.  Order forms will be available at the upcoming YMSAC meeting on Tuesday, November 6.  There will be a group of Cheat Notes members selling them at the door at this year's talent show on  Thursday, November 22.

After 8 Night – Open House:

On Wednesday, November 13, we will be hosting an After 8 Night from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.  This is an open house for next year’s incoming Grade 9 students and families, and for those interested in attending York Mills C.I.  All are welcome.

Trustee’s Community Coffee Get Together:

You are invited to join Trustee Gerri Gershon for her final Community Coffee Get Together on Wednesday, November 14 at 9:15 a.m. at Longo’s on Laird.  This will be Gerri’s last Community Coffee meeting before retirement.  Newly elected trustee, Rachel Chernos Lin, will be in attendance.  Please see the attachment.

Take Our Kids to Work Day for Grade 9 students:

Take Our Kids to Work Day will take place on Wednesday, November 14.   This is an annual event where Grade 9 students have an opportunity to experience the working world.  The day involves students in Grade 9 spending the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host, where they experience and learn about the world of work.  Grade 9 students are encouraged to participate and tests/assessments will not be scheduled in Grade 9 classes on this day.  Permission forms have been distributed in Grade 9 Home Form classes and are due to the Home Form teacher on Monday, November 12. Please encourage your Grade 9 child to participate!
