Band (AMI1O1)
Grade 9 Open
This course is for students wishing to continue playing and learning on the instrument they studied from elementary school.
In some cases, the students may choose a new instrument.
Students are briefly introduced to all the periods of music from evolution all the way to today.
Students will learn how to construct and identify major scales, major keys, and diatonic intervals.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance.
No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!
Band Introduction (AMI1O2)
Grade 9 Open
This course is designed for students who have never played an instrument before.
Students will be introduced to the proper techniques for playing their instrument of choice.
We offer flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, alto sax, french horn, tenor sax, trumpet, euphonium, trombone, tuba, and percussion.
Students are briefly introduced to all the periods of music from evolution all the way to today.
Students will learn how to construct and identify scales and keys.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!
Band (AMI2O1)
Grade 10 Open
This course naturally follows the Grade 9 Band (AMI1O1) course.
Though there is no pre-requisite, it is recommended that students have taken the Grade 9 band course.
The starting basics will still be taught, but done so more quickly than in in grade 9.
All students continue to learn more advanced techniques on their instrument.
In some cases, students may be able to change instruments. The eras of music we focus on are the Baroque and Classical periods.
Students will learn how to construct and identify minor scales, minor keys, diatonic and chromatic intervals, and basic triads.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!
Band (AMI3M1)
Grade 11 University/College Preparation
This course is most often combined with AMI4M, so students will have the opportunity to work with other musicians that are slightly more experienced.
Students must have the necessary pre-requisite (AMI1O1 or AMI2O1) to be successful as the music history and theory is more at the intermediate to advanced level.
Students will learn specific details about the Romantic and 20th Century.
Students will learn about compound and inverted intervals, triads and their inversions, basic chords, and alternative notation.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!
Band (AMI4M1)
Grade 12 University/College Preparation
This course is most often combined with AMI3M, so students will have the opportunity to work and possible mentor with other musicians that are slightly less experienced.
Students must have the necessary pre-requisite (AMI3M) to be successful as the music history and theory is at a very advanced level.
Students will learn specific details about the Romantic and 20th Century.
Students will learn about 4-note chords, cadences, and modulation.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!

Grade 10 Open
This course is designed for students who wish to learn how to play the piano.
Students are usually mixed in abilities: some with little, no, or a lot of experience.
Students will be introduced to the proper techniques for playing the piano.
Students are briefly introduced to all the periods of music from evolution all the way to today, but always with the piano in mind.
Students will learn how to construct and identify scales and keys. Students will perform for each other monthly in a very positive and non-threatening environment.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
Often, students can make their own choices for pieces. Although there is no pre-requisite, it is a bonus to have taken a prior grade 9 music class.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations
Keyboard (AMK3M1)
Grade 11 University/College Preparation
This course is designed for students who wish to continue to learn more advanced piano playing skills.
While there is the necessary pre-requisite (AMK2O1), students may be able to be placed in this course because each student
may learn at his or her own level, but consultation with the teacher is first required.
Students will specifically study the piano’s evolution through the Baroque and Classical periods.
Students will continue to learn how to construct and identify scales and keys.
Students will perform for each other monthly in a very positive and non-threatening environment.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
Often, students can make their own choices for pieces.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!
Keyboard (AMK4M1)
Grade 12 University/College Preparation
This course is designed for students that have prior experience on the piano.
The necessary pre-requisite is AMK3M1 and student must have it in order to be successful in this course.
Students may learn at their own level, but there is an expectation that the student is challenging themselves appropriately.
Students will specifically study the piano’s evolution through the Romantic, 20th, and 21st century.
Students will continue to learn how to construct and identify all major/minor scales and keys.
Students will perform for each other monthly in a very positive and non-threatening environment.
The types of music we play are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
Often, students can make their own choices for pieces.
In keeping with authentic learning experiences, the Culminating Activity is usually a community performance. No need to be intimidated by formal examinations!

This course is designed for students who wish to learn how to sing with confidence.
Students are usually mixed in abilities: some with little, no, or a lot of experience.
Students will be introduced to proper vocal techniques and study how the voice works.
Students are briefly introduced to all the periods of music from evolution all the way to today, but always with singing as the focus.
Students will learn basic music theory required for singing effectively.
Students will perform solos, duets, and as a group in a very positive and non-threatening environment.
The types of music we sing are classical, jazz, folk, multicultural, but we have a strong emphasis on popular and film music.
Often, students can make their own choices for pieces. Although there is no pre-requisite, it is a bonus to have taken a prior grade 9 music class.
