Technological Education

We believe that students learn best by doing!

The Technological Education curriculum takes an activity-based, project-driven approach to learning that provides students with knowledge, skills, and experiences in the subjects of their choice. Our department offers courses in the following areas:

Our courses are designed to emphasize problem-solving techniques and the attainment of real-world, transferable skills.

For Grade 9 Students:

The TIJ1O Exploring Technological Design course enables students to further explore and develop technological knowledge and skills introduced in the elementary science and technology program. Students will have the opportunity to design and create usable products and/or deliver services related to a variety of technological areas. They will gain valuable skills using the tools, equipment, and software commonly used in industry, and expand their awareness of safety, environmental, and societal issues.

The TIJ1O course helps to prepare students for future technological education studies at Bethune in areas of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Technological Design (Architecture/Engineering), and Automotive Technology. Throughout their technological education studies at Bethune students learn about the post-secondary education and training pathways leading to rewarding careers in technology related fields.

Computer Science:

Starting in grade 10, we offer ICS2O Introduction to Computer Studies that teaches students the fundamentals computer programming. Students learn the Alice and Turing programming languages to create 2D and 3D animations.

In grade 11, students can take ICS3U Introduction to Computer Science. In this course students learn to design 2D video games using industry-standard programming tools and the Python programming language. There is no prerequisite for ICS3U, although having taken ICS2O can be helpful.

Grade 12 students can take ICS4U Computer Science. Here we further develop students’ knowledge and skills in computer science. Students will learn to develop Android applications for cellphones and tablets using the Java programming language and Eclipse Integrated Development Environment. Students must have taken ICS3U to take ICS4U.

Computer Engineering:

Beginning in grade 10, we offer TEJ2O Computer Technology that introduces students to computer hardware, networking, electronics, and robotics. This course is an excellent foundation for the grade 11 Computer Engineering course.

Grade 11 students can take TEJ3M Computer Engineering . This course deepens students’ knowledge and skills in electronics, robotics, programming, and networks. Students learn to assemble and program a Boe-Bot to escape from a maze. There is no prerequisite for this course, although having taken TEJ2O can be helpful.

In grade 12, students can take TEJ4M Computer Engineering to expand their understanding of electronics, programming, and robotics. Students learn and apply the C programming language using the Arduino microcontroller board to control an autonomous robot that they will build from scratch. Students must have taken TEJ3M to take TEJ4M.

Technological Design:

The Technological Design (TDJ/TDA) courses integrate sustainable environmental design and are offered at grade 10, 11, and 12.

With no prerequisite for grade 10, we offer TDJ2O1 Technological Design Product Development that introduces students to design and drafting, the building of model concepts, machine safety, woodworking, and students explore career paths in the expanding design technology sector. This course is an excellent foundation for grade 11 Architectural Design - Drafting/CAD.

Grade 11 students can take TDA3M Technological Design: Architectural Design - Drafting/CAD. This course further develops students creativity, knowledge, and skills related to the broad area of architectural design. Students learn to create perspective drawings, floor plan drawings, and explore rendering techniques applied to architecture. In addition, students will further develop modelling skills related to design challenges and be introduced to CAD design software. There is no prerequisite for this course, although having taken TDJ2O will be helpful.

In grade 12, we offer TDA4M Architectural/Engineering Design course focusing on Architectural design, Engineering concepts, and portfolio development. Students will further develop their design skills through traditional drawing and by using 2- dimensional design software and will be introduced to 3- dimensional design software. Students must have taken TDA3M to take TDA4M.

Automotive Technology:

TTJ2O1 Transportation Technology is a Grade 10 open course which introduces students to the service and maintenance of vehicles. Students learn shop safety, how a vehicle works and basic maintenance procedures. Student projects may include engine service, tire/wheel service, electrical/battery service, and proper detailing/maintenance of a vehicle.

TTJ3C1 Transportation Technology is a Grade 11, College preparation course that enables students to further develop their technical knowledge and skills as they study, test, service, and repair engine, electrical, suspension, brake and steering systems on vehicles. They will also learn about apprenticeship, college and university courses leading to careers in the transportation/automotive industry. There is no prerequisite for TTJ3C1.

TTJ3O1 Transportation Technology Vehicle Ownership is a Grade 11, general interest, open course that enables students to become familiar with automobile ownership. Topics covered include options and features of various vehicles, registration and the legal requirements affecting vehicle owners. Students also learn about vehicle financing and insurance, vehicle maintenance, emergency procedures and the responsibilities of being a vehicle owner. There is no prerequisite for TTJ3O1.

TTJ4C1 Transportation Technology is a Grade 12, College preparation course that enables students to further develop their technical knowledge and skills as they study, test, service, and repair engine management systems, power trains, steering/control, suspension, brake, and body systems on vehicles. Students refine their team work and communication skills through practical tasks using a variety of tools and equipment. They will also learn about apprenticeship, college and university courses leading to careers in the transportation/automotive industry. To take TTJ4C1 you must have taken TTJ3C1.
