Courses in Physical and Health Education

Grade 9

Healthy Active Living - Grade 9, Open (PPL 1OM and PPL 1OF)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a wide variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and competence, and safety and injury prevention. They will investigate and examine issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication and social skills.



Grade 10

Healthy Active Living - Grade 10, Open (PPL 2OM and PPL 2OF)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.



Grade 11

Fitness - Grade 11, Open (PAF 3O1)

This is a focus course designed to assess, monitor and improve overall personal health and fitness. This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students' interest throughout their lives. Depending on the students' needs, the course may focus on weight training, aerobics or a variety of fitness activities.

Healthy Active Living - Grade 11, Open (PPL 3OM and PPL 3OF)

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students' interest throughout their lives. Students apply movement principles and sport/game strategies to refine skills, and actively participate in sports and games to enhance their personal competence and fitness. They are encouraged to develop leadership skills and are given opportunities to practise goal-setting, decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. Students study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.



Grade 12

Fitness - Grade 12, Open (PAF 4O1)

This course is designed to advance your technical knowledge, programming skills and provide a strong foundation for individuals interested in advancing knowledge learned in the Grade 11 Fitness Course. This course will assist students in developing intermediate to advance program designs, periodization, plyometrics, rehabilitation techniques, learn application of scientific training principle to gain muscular shape, tone, strength, endurance and flexibility, review of anatomy and physiology.

Recreation and Fitness Leadership - Grade 12, College (PLF 4C1)

This course focuses on the development of leadership and coordination skills related to recreational activities. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to plan, organize, and implement recreational events. They will also learn how to promote the value of physical fitness, personal well-being, and personal safety to others through mentoring. The course will prepare students for college programs in recreational, leisure, and fitness leadership.

Exercise Science - Grade 12, University (PSE 4U1)

This course focuses on the study of human movement and on the systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual's participation in physical activity. The course prepares students for university programs in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, and sports administration.
